World Snake Day aims to change perceptions of snakes. Sponsored by Advocate for Snake Preservation (ASP), its mission focuses on science, education, and advocacy to promote compassionate conservation and coexistence with snakes. From the promoters: "Each year, tens of thousands of rattlesnakes are taken from the wild to be displayed and slaughtered for entertainment and profit at rattlesnake roundups, which occur throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Alabama. Promoted as folksy, family-friendly fun, these events foster disrespect for native wildlife and the natural world. They are a gross example of wildlife management based on fear rather than science. Professional hunters, not bound by 'bag' or 'take' limits, remove snakes from their native habitats and are awarded cash prizes for bringing in the most and biggest snakes. Most snakes are caught by pouring gasoline into their winter dens, polluting surrounding land and water, and may impact up to 350 other wildlife species. Rattlesnake roundups depend on the public's misconception of snakes as dangerous pests that we cannot safely tolerate near our homes. No aspect of these events is sustainable, educational, or necessary." World Snake Day is one of two days highlighting snakes, and the other is Serpents Day.

Ashura marks the Shi'a Islamic new year. "Ashura" is the Arabic word for tenth, thus named as it occurs on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. Ashura is significant to the Shi'a Muslims. It marks the death of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala on October 12, 680 AD. The Islamic calendar follows the moon; therefore, the actual day of the Ashura occurs approximately 11 days earlier each year. National Tattoo Day celebrates the ancient skin art of tattooing, the people who wear them, and the artists who create them. Tattooing has existed for thousands of years and is present in ancient cultures worldwide, including Egyptian, Polynesian, the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The oldest known tattoo dates between 3300 and 3100 BC. Attitudes about tattoos fluctuate throughout history. Currently, they are admired and coveted. At other times, they are shunned and seen as the sign of an outcast. Some tattoos have a religious significance, and others mark rights of passage. In war, tattoos mark a conquest or create a permanent mask, and in the 20th century, tattoos found favor as permanent makeup. Whatever the reason, one cannot help but admire the artistry of many tattoos. Today is your day to celebrate tattoos, or if they're not your thing, appreciate this ancient art.

Wrong Way Corrigan Day (1938): July 17

Wrong-Way Corrigan Day celebrates the anniversary of the New York to Dublin flight by Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan. On July 17, 1938, Corrigan tricked the US Government authorities. They insisted he could not fly to Dublin in his nine-year-old plane because it was too old. Not to be deterred, Corrigan filed an alternate flight plan to fly west across the US to Long Beach, California. The government was quite surprised when he landed in Dublin 28 hours and 13 minutes after takeoff. Corrigan became an instant American and Irish folk hero by successfully hoodwinking the US government. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) did not exist in 1938. It was created on August 23, 1958.
