Lollapalooza, Paris (FR): July 19-21 (est)

06:20 AM | -
Lollapalooza Paris launched in 2017, featuring several days of incredible music and fun-loving fans. Lollapalooza is an annual music festival that features an eclectic collection of popular music genres, including alternative rock, heavy metal, punk rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. The festival was created by Perry Farrell, the lead singer of the alternative rock band Jane's Addiction, in 1991 as a farewell tour for his band and has since evolved into a significant event, attracting thousands of music fans worldwide. Lollapalooza began as a touring festival, visiting multiple cities across the United States. However, it faced financial difficulties in the late 1990s and early 2000s, leading to its cancellation in 2004. The festival returned in 2005 as a weekend-long event in Grant Park, Chicago. Over the years, many notable acts have performed at Lollapalooza, such as Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, and countless others. The festival continues to be a significant event in live music and remains an essential destination for music fans. Typically, the festival includes eight stages, 170+ bands, an art market, shopping, a children's mini-fest, and Chow Town, with food from local restaurants showcasing the variety and quality of their menu selections. In recent years, Lollapalooza has expanded to other countries, with events in France, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, and Sweden. The festival is known for its diverse lineup of established and up-and-coming artists and its variety of art installations, food vendors, and other attractions. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are unknown until a few months, weeks, or days before the event. Robin Hood, Nottingham Archery Tournament & Festival (UK): July 20-21

06:20 AM | -
These events take the idea of a sister city to a new level. Concurrently, Sherwood, Oregon, and Nottingham, England, hold Robin Hood-themed festivals. In England, Nottingham Archery Tournament & Festival. In Oregon, step back into the 12th century with music, food, knights, and ladies for the Robin Hood Festival. Archers compete in both locations (across the pond), and attendees rejoice. The Sherwood Festival came about in 1956 due to a friendly challenge between the yeoman of Nottingham and the festival president in Sherwood. From the event champion's website: "In February 1956, the President of the Robin Hood Festival Association of Sherwood, Oregon, issued an archery challenge to the yeomen of Nottingham, England. The archers would come from the entire Northwestern part of the United States. To cement their bond with the people of Nottingham, England, Sherwood sent 50 redwood oak trees as a living memorial. In March 1956, England accepted the challenge and immediately started working out the details. The rounds would be a double American 810, and each round would be 90 arrows at the distance of 60, 50, and 40 yards and follow the FITA. equipment rules. In July 1956, a picture of the silver Tiffany bowl trophy donated by the Robin Hood Festival Association was sent to Nottingham, England, along with communication rules during the shoot. Both competitions occurred on the same day, but England was shooting eight hours later due to time differences. Thus went the first competition, and the mayor of Sherwood has sent a new challenge each year since."

Chessboxing Day, Intl: July 21

06:20 AM | -
The Šančių Sporto Centras in Kauno, Lithuania, initiated International Chessboxing Day. Chessboxing is gaining popularity nationwide, with several tournaments played onsite to mark the day. Chessboxing is a hybrid sport combining two traditional disciplines: chess and boxing, with competitors facing each other in alternating rounds. This unique sport tests its contestants' physical prowess and mental agility, as they need to be adept at boxing and chess to succeed. Players must maintain their concentration and strategic thinking under the physical duress of boxing, making it a unique test of mind-body coordination. A chessboxing match consists of 11 three-minute rounds: six-speed chess and five boxing. Scoring a knockout, checkmate, judge decision, or exceeding the time limit in chess determines the winner of each round. Dutch artist Iepe Rubingh (August 17, 1974-May 8, 2020) invented the sport in the early 2000s, inspired by French artist and filmmaker Enki Bilal's comic book "Froid Équateur." It has grown into a recognized competition with a world championship and is very popular in Germany, the United Kingdom, India, and Russia.
