Arctic Sea Ice Day: July 15

06:20 AM | -
Arctic Sea Ice Day calls attention to the diminishing ice caps in the Arctic Sea, which threatens the lives of animals, ocean currents, and global weather patterns. You can help: 1. Learn more about local and regional renewable energy options and programs, including solar or wind. 2. Be a Dork Day: July 15

06:20 AM | -
Be a Dork Day is a license to be weird, arcane, and dorky. Although the 'official' Google definition of a dork describes one as a "dull, slow-witted, or socially inept person," the modern version is quirky. Yes, these eccentrics might not follow the usual trends or be with the in-crowd. Still, dorks are often some of the most extraordinary people around. Being cool is not a requirement to make it in life, so kudos to all dorks who choose to remain faithful to living the life they want!

Canada Day, Ntl. Respect for (US): July 15

06:20 AM | -
National Respect for Canada Day encourages Stateside Americans to give the nod to our northern neighbors. Despite the jokes Canadians and the States like to throw at one another, most stateside will readily admit that Canada is undoubtedly the best neighbor the U.S. could ever have.

Couch Potato Day (1976): July 15

06:20 AM | -
Today is the anniversary of the first uttering of the words "couch potato" on July 15, 1976, by Tom Iacino of Pasadena, California. He was referring to his friend, cartoonist Robert Armstrong. According to a 2014 interview in Bon Appetite magazine, Armstrong's girlfriend answered the phone instead of saying, "Is Bob there?" Iacino instead asked, "Hey, is the couch potato there?" Armstrong loved the saying and trademarked it. By 1983 Armstrong and author and satirist Jack Mingo released "The Official Couch Potato Handbook" (currently published by Last Gasp Books). It became a best seller. Football fans use "couch potato" to mark the first Saturday of the College football season. A day in which one can sit on the couch and watch football games all day long, snacking, drinking beer, and simply enjoying themselves. Typically this falls on the Saturday after Labor Day. However you choose to celebrate, today is your day to kick off your shoes and plunge into that couch or lazy chair guilt-free!

Doghouse Day, Get Out of the, Ntl.: July 15

06:20 AM | -
The third Monday of July is a true man's day, "National Get Out of the Doghouse Day." Its purpose is to encourage men to get their act together and do the right thing to put them back into their wives' good graces. Being in the "dog house" is an American colloquialism men often use to describe a situation where they know they've done something they shouldn't have. Their partner, usually a wife or girlfriend, has banished the offending male from the house as punishment, leaving him just the doghouse for sleep. Banishment typically includes not speaking to the offending male, passive-aggressive behavior, withholding affection, angry outbursts, and generally uncomfortable home life for anywhere from an hour to weeks. This event first ran in 1999. It was created by Social Media marketing expert Heidi Richards Mooney.

Give Something Away Day, Ntl.: July 15

06:20 AM | -
Most of us have a lot of things we don't need. Today is the day to get rid of some of that stuff and give it a new life with someone who needs it. Use Give Something Away Day to clean out your drawers and closets. You'll make space, and your items may find a new life with someone who needs them. This event first ran in 2014.

Gummi Worm Day, Ntl.: July 15

06:20 AM | -
Hans Riegel invented the Gummi Bear in Germany in 1922. In 1981 Trolli took the idea of the Gummi Bear and molded the jelly confection into worms. The idea was that children would love to wig out their parents by eating worms. It was a brilliant marketing ploy that children continue to eat up today.

Saint Swithin's Day (UK)(971 AD): July 15

06:20 AM | -
Legend says if rain falls on Saint Swithin's Day, the next 40 days will be wet, and if it does not, the next 40 days will be dry. The tradition began on July 15, 971 AD, a day it rained heavily as the relics of the Saint Swithin were transferred to Winchester Cathedral. So will the rest of summer be wet or dry? We won't know until the end of the day. Happy Saint Swithin's Day!

Youth Skills Day, World: July 15

06:20 AM | -
From the United Nations: "Why is World Youth Skills Day important? Rising youth unemployment is one of the most significant problems facing economies and societies in today's world for developed and developing countries alike. The latest Global Employment Trends for Youth 2020: Technology and the future of jobs shows that since 2017, there has been an upward trend in the number of youth not in employment, education or training (NEET). In 2016 there were 259 million young people classified as NEET – a number that rose to an estimated 267 million in 2019, and is projected to continue climbing to around 273 million in 2021. In terms of percentage, the trend was also slightly up from 21.7% in 2015 to 22.4% in 2020 – implying that the international target to reduce the NEET rate by 2020 will be missed. Designated by the General assembly in 2014, the World Youth Skills Day is an opportunity for young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, and public and private sector stakeholders to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship."

Shark Week: July 7-13

06:20 AM | -
Shark Week is television's longest-running must-see summer TV event on Discovery Channel. Shark Week includes live talk shows, documentaries, and all things sharks. Aquariums and other forms of amusement tied to oceans and the sea often have specials throughout Shark Week. Shark Week is the programming week that put Discovery Channel initiated in 1986.

PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are unknown until a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.
