Bi-national Health Week (US/CA/MX-varies locally): October

06:20 AM | -
Each year a week in October is set aside in the United States, Canada, and Mexico to focus on health. The week can happen at any time during October, with different cities, provinces, and states staggering dates throughout the month with localized programs. See your local universities, hospitals, and clinics for participation in your local. It is a time for neighboring nations to celebrate their friendship and renew their partnership in creating a healthier and more prosperous future for their peoples and each other.

Bird Day, Intl. (Caribbean): October 12

06:20 AM | -
International Migratory Bird Day occurs on the second Saturday in May in the U.S. and Canada and on the 2nd Saturday in October in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean each year. But we recognize that this date doesn't work well for all bird events, bird festival organizers, or migratory birds. To the south, migratory birds have left, heading for breeding sites to the north. Farther north, the birds haven't arrived. We remedied this problem by removing the month and day from our bird education and festival materials, leaving only the year, and reminding groups every day is bird day. Now, IMBD is celebrated almost year-round. Most U.S. and Canada events occur in April and May, while fall events are the norm in the Caribbean and Latin America. Public awareness and concern are crucial components of migratory bird conservation. Citizens who are enthusiastic about birds, informed about threats and empowered to become involved in addressing those threats can significantly contribute to maintaining healthy bird populations. By modeling what can be done and involving people, their interest and involvement in stewardship can grow. One of the most successful vehicles for public education on migratory birds is International Migratory Bird Day(IMBD). Across the Americas, Bird Day events are great ways to get involved. Materials are available at: http://www.birdday.org/education/download-materials.

Black Dog Day, Ntl.: October 1

06:20 AM | -
Like black cats, black dogs are often not adopted due to their color and nothing else. There is no reason not to get a black dog, which is strictly aesthetics. Besides, if you live in a snowy or sandy location, they're much easier to spot than just about any other color. Enjoy National Black Dog Day.

Black Tuesday (1929): October 29

06:20 AM | -
Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929, is when the stock market collapsed, losing 13% of its value in a single day and sending the industrialized world into a ten-year economic depression. Sixteen million four hundred ten thousand thirty shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange that day, a record. Leading up to Black Tuesday, the stock market fell for nearly six weeks, losing 40% of its value between September 1929 and October 29, 1929. This catastrophic event wiped out the savings of millions of people and ushered in the worst economic period in global history, known today as the Great Depression. And then history almost repeated itself. As early as 2006, warning signs started to appear in the US economy. By 2008 the world entered what would become known as the Great Recession. During this event, millions lost their homes, jobs, and savings. Wages stagnated, and this recession was particularly brutal on white collar, college educated, and knowledge workers, wiping out entire industries while consolidating others. The impact globally of the 2008 economic implosion was even more profound than in 1929. Over a decade later, countries, families, and entire communities are still trying to recover. Just as gains were being made, COVID-19 hit. Nearly three years into that crisis, the world appears to be on the precipice of another major global economic catastrophe due to the pandemic, global warming, conflicts, and inflation.
