Cerebral Palsy Day, World: October 6

06:20 AM | -
Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a complex, lifelong disability. It primarily affects movement, but people with CP may also have visual, learning, hearing, speech, epilepsy, and intellectual impairments. It can be mild – a weakness in one hand – to severe – where people have little control over movements or speech and may need 24-hour assistance. People living with CP can experience a range of responses from others in their communities. They face deep-seated but misguided sympathy or pity on one end of the spectrum. Though intentions are good, they infantilize the person with CP. They can be smothered with (too much) love and spoken to in a simple, childlike way. Others can subconsciously over-protect a person with CP and thus prevent them from having essential life experiences. On the other end of the spectrum, CP is viewed through deep-seated cultural beliefs. It may be seen as validation of superstitions about the mother or wrath upon a family. Some even believe that CP is contagious or that a child with CP brings shame to a family. Mothers can be abandoned with their children, or a person with CP lives their lives in an institution. And in the middle are thousands of fine people who still find it difficult to make eye contact or know how to communicate with someone who has CP. It is not that they feel ill will; it is just best—maybe even polite—to not engage. There is nothing to be gained in blaming people for their ignorance about CP. Instead, we will work to put an end to it. We have the ability and the moral obligation to ensure everyone knows the truth and acts accordingly. Bringing awareness to these issues and making tools available to those worldwide affected by Cerebral Palsy is the purpose of World Cerebral Palsy Day.

Champagne Day, Global: October 25

06:20 AM | -
Global Champagne Day occurs in October. Champagne is a region of France, and only sparkling wines from this region are permitted to be called champagne. The beverage was invented in the 1600s by Pierre Pérignon, a Benedictine monk of the Abby of Hautvillers. One of his duties at the Abby was to care for the wine cellars. Today we know him as Dom Pérignon. The original nickname Pérignon gave champagne was "mad wine." The bubbles characterizing it were not desirable and downright aggravating to Pérignon. He was attempting to produce white wine, and quality white wines don't have bubbles. In a twist of fate, Pérignon gave in to the mad wine, developing the méthode champenoise in 1670. Pérignon spent 47 years caring for the wines of the Abby, where he developed many pressing and fermenting processes still used today. Champagne would later become the preferred beverage of the elite and the universal symbol of congratulations and celebration.

Character Counts Week, Ntl.: October 20-26

06:20 AM | -
The federal government, state governors, mayors, and others issue Character Counts Week proclamations yearly. These help raise awareness and draw attention to local celebrations and character-building success stories. The following is from the 2016 Presidential declaration. "The task of shaping America's course falls to each of us as individuals who make up our American family, and as we celebrate National Character Counts Week, let us seek to live out the ideals that have inspired our country's journey that define our national character. No matter who you are, what you look like, where you come from, or your circumstances, America should be where the things that make you unique and different call for celebration. That promise of equality and acceptance has been our country's North Star since its founding. Thinking of how that centuries-old ideal translates into our lives today comes down to all of us showing others the compassion and acceptance that we would only wish for ourselves. Suppose we seek to understand one another and take advantage of opportunities to bring people together across lines of difference. In that case, we will increasingly realize as a people that we are more alike than we are different. Let us listen to each other, see each other, and recognize the common humanity that makes America what it is. Let us embrace the multitudes of races, faiths, cultures, and origins that make up our diverse, vibrant Nation. It will make us better as a people and more potent as a country, and it starts with reflecting on how we live our lives, how we treat others, and the example we set for those around us. We have a collective obligation to reflect in our own lives the values we strive to reflect in our national life, and no gesture of goodwill is too small. Together, ripples of kindness can drown out voices of hate, wash away cynicism and doubt, and help us see the world in more authentic colors."

Checklist Day (1935): October 30

October 30, 1935, Boeing Model 299 Flying Fortress, NX13372, took off on its initial run. It crashed right after takeoff, stalling first. Three of the men on board escaped the crash. It was later discovered that going through a checklist before takeoff would have prevented the crash. In this instance, the flight crew had forgotten to release the flight control gust locks. Due to this accident, the pre-flight checklist was developed and used by all planes before taking off, whether private, military, or commercial.

Chiang Kai-shek Day (TW)(1887): October 31

06:20 AM | -
Chiang Kai-shek (October 31, 1887 - April 5, 1975) was a military leader and politician who fought against communism. With the establishment of the communist government in China in 1949, Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan and continued to lead the struggle against communism until his death in 1975. Chiang Kai-shek is the person responsible for the creation of Taiwan and its separation from China. To this day, China considers Taiwan Chinese territory and does not recognize it as a state. From 1955-1979, the United States acted as a protector. With the re-establishment of relations with China beginning in 1972, the United States ended diplomatic ties with Taiwan and established them with China to preserve the more lucrative arrangement. As of this writing, only 13 countries and the Vatican continue to have full diplomatic relations with the island country.

Chicago Marathon, Bank of America (US-IL): October 13

06:20 AM | -
The Chicago Marathon is one of several major marathons each year in the United States and worldwide. In November 1976, at the Metropolitan YMCA on LaSalle St., five key founders of what would eventually become the Bank of America Chicago Marathon met to begin discussions and planning. Those present included Wayne Goeldner, physical education director of the Hyde Park YMCA; Wendell "Wendy" Miller, a partner in a financial advising firm and founder of Midwest Masters Running Club; Bill Robinson, Executive Director of Friends of Parks; Sharon Meir, Director of Women's Sports, at the Loop Center YMCA; and Dr. Noel Nequin, Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at the Swedish Covenant Hospital. At this meeting, the group decided it was time for a marathon in Chicago. The first race occurred in 1977. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are unknown until a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

With the majority of high-paying jobs in first-world countries requiring computers and hand-held devices and staying seated for hours each day, poor posture has become epidemic. It leads to multiple issues, including back pain and neck pain. Chiropractors train to alleviate this, and they have quickly become some of the most sought-after people in our lives. National Chiropractic Month is a nationally recognized awareness month in the US, endorsed through an initiative of congress in 2011.

Chocolate Cupcake Day: October 18

06:20 AM | -
Cupcakes were initially cooked in pottery cups called ramekins, teacups, or other small ceramic dishes to facilitate serving cake to multiple people at once. Eliza Leslie's 1828 recipe for cupcakes, published in her self-named cookbook that year, is the first known reference to cupcakes in print. Today cupcakes are a gourmet, multi-million dollar business. The largest cupcake ever created? Weighing in at 2,594 lb (1176.62 kg), this mammoth cupcake claimed the World's Record on November 2, 2011, and was made by Georgetown Cupcake in Sterling, Virginia. The most expensive cupcake ever sold? The $42,000 diamond sprinkled confection was bought on April 15, 2009, and created by Green Movsessian of Gaithersburg, Maryland. National Chocolate Cupcake Day is an unofficial event with no sponsor.
