Applejack Month: October

06:20 AM | -
National Applejack Month occurs each year in October and celebrates the first original distilled liquor in the United States, also known as "Jersey Lightning." Applejack is an early colonial drink made from hard cider, wine, or beer. To make it, simply freeze the beverage, peel off the ice (the water component), and what remains is highly concentrated alcohol. The process is called "freeze distillation." Applejack grew in popularity when the reverend John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) worked his way up and down the Ohio River, distributing apple tree seeds to the people and instructing them on how to create applejack from the fruits of their labor. Applejack is used in various cocktails and continues to be distilled today by Lairds of Scobeyville, New Jersey, a licensed distillery since 1780.

Arab American Voter Registration Day, Ntl.: September 17

06:20 AM | -
Yalla, Yalla Habibi! Today is Arab American Voter Registration Day in the United States, a campaign designed to ensure US citizens of Arab ancestry are registered to vote ahead of the general election. Yalla (which sounds like 'Yella') is Arabic for "let's go." #YallaVote, #MyArabVote As of this writing, in 2020, Arab Americans numbered approximately 4 million in the United States. Currently, most people of Arab descent will identify as either Asian or Caucasian/non-Hispanic in demographic polls, as the US Census in 2020 does not include a separate designation. Arab Americans are a diverse group of people defined by historical and geographic origin: West Asia (aka the Middle East) and North Africa; and the Semitic languages of Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, Akkadian, Eblaite, and Amorite, with the last three, no longer used except in academic circles. In case you're wondering, to be "Semitic" has nothing to do with your religion. It means you come from a cultural group that speaks those languages and is of West Asian, North African, or Persian ancestry. Arab Americans have been part of America's fabric since before the Revolutionary War. The earliest immigrants were merchants and traders, mostly of Sephardic heritage (Jewish), and arriving individually or in small groups until the mid-nineteenth century. That changed in the 1870s, through the early 1900s, with a sizeable Christian migration from areas of the Ottoman Empire. It was a critical growth period in US history. Unfortunately, xenophobia was very much alive in the United States. Alarmed by so many people arriving from overseas that weren't "white Protestant Christians," including a large influx of Jewish immigrants, the Johnson-Reed Quota Act was passed by congress in 1924. It virtually ended immigration from Asian countries, including modern-day Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Palestine. It was one of three immigration laws between 1917 and 1924 that specifically targeted people based on national origin, non-English literacy, race, and religion. The three laws would have a devastating and deadly effect on many peoples seeking to escape war, oppression, and persecution in the next several decades. With the establishment of Israel in 1948, the law received revisions from 1952 through 1966. Modifications allowed another 80,000 Arabs, mainly from Palestine and Egypt, to arrive in the US. With immigration rules tight, these immigrants tended to be wealthier than most of their countrymen, light-skinned, and Christian. The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 ended much of the discriminatory laws used to justify limited immigration to the US of non-Northern European and non-Christian people. From 1967 on, Arab immigrants of the Muslim faith out-numbered those of Christian, and they arrived from areas seeing increased conflict and hardship, predominantly Palestine and Lebanon. By the 1990s, large migrations from Iraq, the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and their cousins: Armenians, Turks, and Persians from Iran and neighboring countries, chose to make the US their new home. As a cultural group in the US, regardless of faith, Arab Americans tend to be highly educated, entrepreneurial, and family-focused, with above-average incomes. In 2002, the last comprehensive poll, 63% of Arab Americans were Christian, 24% Muslim, and 13% were Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, non-religious, or other faiths.

Architecture Day, World: October 7

CELEBRATING ARCHITECTURE'S IMPACT ON SOCIETY AND CULTURE:

WORLD ARCHITECTURE DAY

World Architecture Day, observed annually on the first Monday of October, was established by the International Union of Architects (UIA) in 1985 to celebrate architecture's vital role in shaping communities, cultures, and the built environment. The day aligns with the United Nation's World Habitat Day, underscoring the connection between architecture and sustainable urban development. The purpose of World Architecture Day is to highlight architecture's social, cultural, and environmental impact, promoting awareness of its contributions to humanity.

The celebration features global events such as exhibitions, conferences, and architectural tours, where architects, students, and the general public come together to reflect on the profession's challenges and achievements. Architects often present innovative designs on sustainability, accessibility, and urban planning. Many countries also host lectures and workshops, fostering discussions on architecture's future role in addressing climate change and urbanization.

Architecture has a long and rich history, evolving from ancient structures like the Egyptian pyramids and Greek temples to modern skyscrapers and eco-friendly buildings. World Architecture Day emphasizes the critical importance of architecture in creating spaces that improve quality of life and reflect human ingenuity. It is a platform for architects and urban planners to engage with communities and envision more sustainable and inclusive futures. Participants include architects, designers, students, and professionals from the construction industry, all come together to celebrate architecture's profound influence on human civilization.

IMPACTFUL ARCHITECTURAL STYLES THROUGHOUT HISTORY

Throughout history, several architectural movements have left a lasting impact on the design and construction of buildings, each reflecting the cultural, technological, and artistic values of their time. Here are some of the most influential architectural movements:

Classical Architecture (6th century BCE - 4th century CE)

Classical architecture in ancient Greece and Rome emphasizes symmetry, proportion, and using columns. Notable examples include the Parthenon in Athens and the Roman Colosseum. This movement influenced many later styles, including the Renaissance and Neoclassical movements.

Gothic Architecture (12th - 16th centuries)

Pointed arches, ribbed vaults, flying buttresses, and large stained glass windows characterize Gothic architecture. It was prominent in European cathedrals, with examples like Notre-Dame de Paris and Chartres Cathedral, aiming to inspire awe and elevate spiritual experiences.

Renaissance Architecture (14th - 17th centuries)

Originating in Italy, Renaissance architecture marked a revival of classical ideals of symmetry, proportion, and geometry. Key architects like Filippo Brunelleschi and Michelangelo introduced innovations in perspective and dome construction, which is evident in works like Florence Cathedral and St. Peter's Basilica.

Baroque Architecture (17th - 18th centuries)

Baroque architecture is known for its grandeur, ornate details, and dramatic use of light and shadow. It sought to evoke emotion and power, often commissioned by the Catholic Church during the Counter-Reformation. Notable examples include the Palace of Versailles in France and St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

Neoclassical Architecture (18th - 19th centuries)

Neoclassical architecture drew directly from ideals of ancient Greece and Rome, promoting simplicity, symmetry, and grandeur. This style is often found in public buildings and monuments, like the US Capitol and the British Museum.

Art Nouveau (Late 19th - Early 20th centuries)

Art Nouveau emphasized organic forms, flowing lines, and intricate details inspired by nature. Architects like Antoni Gaudí, whose designs include the famous Sagrada Família of Barcelona, promoted this concept.

Modernism (Early 20th century - Mid-20th century)

Modernist architecture sought to break away from historical styles, focusing on functionality, simplicity, and new materials like steel, glass, and concrete. Key figures include Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Iconic buildings include the Villa Savoye and the Bauhaus.

Postmodernism (Late 20th century)

Postmodern architecture reacted against modernism's austerity by reintroducing ornamentation, eclecticism, and playful design elements. Architects like Michael Graves and Philip Johnson explored bold colors, historical references, and unconventional forms with famous works like the Portland and AT&T buildings.

Sustainable Architecture (21st century)

The focus of sustainable architecture is on creating environmentally friendly designs that reduce the impact on the environment. Buildings in this movement prioritize energy efficiency, renewable materials, and green technologies. The Edge in Amsterdam, iThra in Dhahran, and Bosco Verticale in Milan are prime examples.

World Architecture Day celebrates each of these movements, their influence on aesthetics of buildings and how people live, work, and interact with their environments. Each shapes cultural identities and the urban landscapes we cherish worldwide.

Armed Forces Day (EG)(1973): October 6

06:20 AM | -
In 1967 the nation-state of Israel invaded Egypt, Jordanian territory, and Syria, taking control over the Sinai Peninsula, East Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights in what would be called the 6-Day War. On October 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria attacked Israel to reclaim lost territory, putting Israel on the defensive for the first time since its founding. Until this time, no nation had orchestrated the first strike on Israel. The surprise attack led to years of animosity between the two nations, which was finally put to rest at the Camp David Accords (1978), with US President Jimmy Carter brokering peace between the two neighboring countries. Part of that agreement returned the Sinai Peninsula and control of the Suez Canal to Egypt. Israel then became the top recipient of US aid worldwide, with Egypt benefiting as the second. Peace and aid allocations have held ever since. Today is a National Egyptian holiday commemorating the beginning of the war that would lead to reclaiming of Egyptian territory.

Audio Drama Day, World (1938): October 30

06:20 AM | -
On October 30, 1938, Orson Wells broadcast his audio play "The War of The Worlds." The play convinced thousands of people they were being invaded from outer space. As television overtook radio as the primary form of entertainment, the lost art of the audio play seemed to disappear. Audiobooks and podcasts have brought back this lost art, making it even more popular than in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. Audio Drama Day first ran in 2012.

Audio/Video Heritage Day, World: October 27

06:20 AM | -
Audiovisual documents, such as films, radio, and television programs, are our shared heritage and contain the primary records of the 20th and 21st centuries. However, countless documentary treasures have disappeared, been destroyed, or lost since the invention of image and sound technologies. World Day for Audiovisual Heritage and the Memory of the World Program honors the work of preservation professionals safeguarding our heritage. In 2005, the United Nations General Conference approved World Day for Audiovisual Heritage as a mechanism to raise general awareness of the need for urgent measures to be taken and to acknowledge the importance of audiovisual documents as an integral part of national identity.

Baby Loss Awareness Week (UK): October 9-15

06:20 AM | -
Baby Loss Awareness Week runs in October each year. It is an opportunity for bereaved parents, family members, and friends to commemorate their babies' all-too-brief lives, knowing that thousands of other families elsewhere in the world will be doing the same. The week also provides a crucial opportunity for people to talk openly about the subject and raise awareness of baby loss. The week ends with Baby Loss Awareness Day on October 15th, a date recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day worldwide. Here in the UK, we invite you to participate in the global 'Wave of Light.' Light a candle at 7 pm and leave it burning for at least 1 hour. This can be done individually, in a group, at home, or in a communal space. Wherever you do this, you will unite with others worldwide in honor of those babies who lit up our lives for a short time. History of Baby Loss Awareness Week October 15th, 2002, was the inaugural Baby Loss Awareness Day in the UK and was initiated by a group of parents inspired by Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day in the United States. Through the sale of handmade blue and pink ribbon pins, they raised several thousand pounds for UK organizations supporting bereaved parents. 2003: The campaign saw the day expanded to a week with events across the UK. The first official 'Wave of Light' service in the UK was held at the American Church in London and attended by representatives and members of each participating organization. There were also services held across the UK from Scotland to Surrey. Once again, the ribbon pins were made and sold by bereaved parents. 2004: The campaign was a more formal collaboration between the five organizations involved, which included Sands, the Miscarriage Association, the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, ARC, and Babyloss.com. The ribbon pins were commercially manufactured, and balloon releases were held in several locations. The group organized a secular service at the Royal Statistical Society in London, and there were over twenty other events around the UK. In 2006 the distinctive two-color ribbon was introduced, and bereaved parents once again made the ribbon pins with the help of their family and friends. Since 2010 Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, has played a pivotal role in the organization of the week and, since 2014, has taken a lead role in promoting the week as part of its work raising awareness of the issues surrounding pregnancy and baby loss in the UK.

Back Care Awareness Week (UK): October 7-12

06:20 AM | -
National Back Care Awareness Week is an annual event during October in the UK that focuses on back health and avoiding back injuries. Back pain is common and affects around one-third of the adult population yearly. Fortunately for most people, the pain improves over a few weeks or months, and they soon return to their normal activities, including work. The ultimate way to keep your spine and back in top condition and back to normal if it hurts is to be active! Try not to stay in one position too long; move about regularly and have a stretch. Start by trying this every 15 minutes, then increase this gradually as the pain settles.
