Cherry Turnover Day celebrates a delicious pastry, the cherry turnover. Seventy-five percent of the cherries sold in the United States are grown in the state of Michigan.
A turnover is a style of baked pastry in a wedge shaped that is stuffed with either a sweet or savory filling.
The turnover has been around since Roman times and could be considered the first portable sandwich. At that time they were usually filled with meats. Types of turnovers from around the world whose names you may be familiar with include Calzones, Samosas, Pierogies, Dim Sum, Empanadas and Pastelitos.
