Bison Month, Ntl.: July

06:20 AM | -
ABOUT NATIONAL BISON MONTH National Bison Month is celebrated in July to raise awareness about bison, their historical significance, ecological role, and contributions to North American heritage. The month celebrates the American bison, often called buffalo and promotes conservation efforts. Difference Between Bison and Buffalo Bison and buffalo are distinct animals, though the terms are often used interchangeably in North America. Key differences include: Species: Bison: Native to North America and Europe. Examples include the American bison (Bison bison) and European bison (Bison bonasus). Buffalo: Native to Africa and Asia. Examples include the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) and the Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). Physical Characteristics: Bison: Have a large hump over their shoulders, large heads, and thick fur, particularly around the head and shoulders. Buffalo: Lack the hump, have sleeker bodies, and vary significantly in horn shape and size. Nutritional Benefits of Bison Meat Bison meat is considered highly nutritious due to several factors: Lean Protein: Bison meat is lower in fat and calories than beef, making it a lean source of protein. High in Vitamins and Minerals: Rich in B vitamins (B12, B6), zinc, iron, and selenium. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Contains higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids compared to grain-fed beef. Lower in Cholesterol: Bison meat typically has lower cholesterol levels than beef, pork, and chicken. Origins of National Bison Month National Bison Month began in 1990, spearheaded by the National Bison Association (NBA) and other conservation groups and enthusiasts. The initiative was created to promote bisons' historical importance, nutritional benefits, and ecological role in grassland ecosystems. The NBA, alongside other organizations, has worked to restore bison populations, advocate for sustainable bison ranching, and educate the public about the significance of this iconic animal.

Canada Day (CA)(1867): July 1

06:20 AM | -
Canada Day is Canada's National day. On July 1, 1867, the British North America Act was enacted, creating the country of Canada within the British Empire and empowering it with full self-governing authority. Before this day, the Canadian territory was three different regions. The holiday was known as Dominion Day until 1982 when it changed to Constitution Day. 1982, Canada finally declared its independence from the British Crown and ratified its constitution. Today this compilation of historical events is known as Canada Day, a day equivalent to the 4th of July in the United States for the Canadians. However, Canadians did not need to fight a revolution to establish and enact their constitution. The monarch in the United Kingdom continues as their monarch. When Canada Day falls on a weekend, it is observed as a national holiday on the following Monday.

Cell Phone Courtesy Month, Ntl.: July

06:20 AM | -
Founded in 2002 by etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore, National Cell Phone Courtesy Month occurs each year in July. In a 2010 poll, 40% of Americans stated they “often experience generally rude or disrespectful behavior, cursing, near-cursing or people interrupting conversations to use e-mail or cell phones.” Cell phone rudeness is on the rise. This is a month to focus on what you can do. The following are some basic guidelines: 1) If live people are with you, pay attention to them. The calls and text can wait. 2) Don’t advertise your business. Excuse yourself from a gathering if you need to speak on the phone. 3) If you know taking the call will be emotional, reject it until you’re in a quiet place without an audience. 4) Keep your phone on vibrate when in public. 5) Watch your voice volume. If you have to yell to be heard, hang up and resume when you are at a quieter place. 6) Excuse yourself ahead of time by alerting your companions if you’re expecting a call and will need to leave the group to take it. 7) Send a text message when you want to send a quick message, but not as a replacement for a conversation. 8) Use earphones or a headset to avoid distracting others in public areas whilst listening to streaming media. 9) Never text and drive. 10) Avoid texting and social media postings if you’ve been drinking.

Disabilities Dignity (Pride) Month: July

06:20 AM | -
Disability Dignity Month focuses on the 30% of Americans with a physical or mental disability. It celebrates the unique culture of various disability communities and their achievements. Advocates hope to teach the general population to avoid terms considered ableist. Ableist language uses common words tied to a disability that can be seen in a derogatory context. Examples include saying retarded instead of mentally impaired. Blind instead of saying vision impaired, or dumb instead of mute. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. Due to the anniversary, July is chosen as Disability Dignity Month; some refer to this event as Disability Pride Month.

Chocolate Covered Cherry Day, Ntl.: January 3

06:20 AM | -
Chocolate Covered Cherry Day celebrates the cordial of cherries covered in chocolate. The idea of covering fruits, nuts, and even nougat with chocolate wasn’t possible until the 19th century. The technology needed to separate the chocolate from cocoa butter wouldn’t be invented until 1828 by Conrad Van Houten in today’s Netherlands. Before this process, chocolate was used as a spice. Other techniques, including conching, invented by Rudolph Lindt in 1879, would eventually lead to that box of chocolates and candy bars we are familiar with today. Chocolate Covered Cherry Day is an unofficial holiday with no sponsor.

Choreographers Day, Intl (1904): January 9

06:20 AM | -
International Choreography Day marks the birthdate (in the Julian calendar used by the Russian empire at the time) of George Balanchine on January 9, 1904, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He is affectionately called "Mr. B." in the ballet community. Balanchine is the reason for the word choreography, a term coined to describe the revolutionary dancing he created for the Rogers and Hammerstein play "On Your Toes," which debuted on stage on April 11, 1936. He is also considered the father of American ballet. Choreography is the art of designing movement sequences that specify motion and form. The concept began with court dances and folk traditions, gradually refining into an art form through the adoption of ballet in Renaissance Italy and France. As ballet evolved, directors experimented with storytelling, musicality, and expressive movement. Balanchine took ballet to the next level. MR. B COMES TO BROADWAY Balanchine hails from a classical dance background. He trained at the Imperial Ballet School in Saint Petersburg and later worked in Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, one of the most influential ballet companies of the 20th century. His early work included a fusion of classical technique with avant-garde concepts. In 1933, Balanchine moved to the United States. By 1935, he was commissioned to orchestrate the groundbreaking dance scenes in the Broadway play "On Your Toes." As mentioned above, the term choreography was coined to describe his work. It was so good the world needed a new word. Twelve years later, he co-founded the New York City Ballet in 1948, which became a pivotal platform for his choreographic innovations. His collaboration with composer Igor Stravinsky in the 1950s and 1960s resulted in iconic works like "Agon" and "The Firebird," where the integration of contemporary music and innovative choreography pushed the boundaries of what ballet could be. MR B'S CHOREOGRAPHIC STYLE Balanchine diverged from the narrative-driven ballets of the 19th century, focusing instead on "plotless" ballets where movement, music, and pure form narrated the story, known as neoclassical ballet. It stripped away elaborate costumes and sets, emphasizing speed, athleticism, and precision. This approach highlighted the dancers' technique and the music's rhythms, offering a fresh perspective on ballet that contrasted sharply with the opulence and narrative focus of traditional ballets like those of Marius Petipa. Balanchine's influence extended beyond his choreographic works. He was a master teacher, emphasizing a distinct aesthetic in his dancers, marked by high extensions, speed, and precision. His teaching methods and artistic philosophy greatly influenced the training of dancers in America and around the world. International Choreography Day is a tribute to him and his legacy.

Christian Unity Week, Intl. (Northern Hemisphere): January 18-25

06:20 AM | -
At least once a year (January in the Northern Hemisphere, June in the Southern Hemisphere), Christians are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (see John 17.21). Hearts are touched, and Christians come together to pray for their unity. Congregations and parishes exchange preachers or arrange special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services. The event that connects to this unique experience is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Traditionally, the week of prayer is celebrated between 18-25 January, between the feasts of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. In the southern hemisphere, where January is a vacation time, churches often find other days to celebrate it, for example, around Pentecost, which is also a symbolic date for unity.
