Lollapalooza Paris launched in 2017, featuring several days of incredible music and fun-loving fans. Lollapalooza is an annual music festival that features an eclectic collection of popular music genres, including alternative rock, heavy metal, punk rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. The festival was created by Perry Farrell, the lead singer of the alternative rock band Jane's Addiction, in 1991 as a farewell tour for his band and has since evolved into a significant event, attracting thousands of music fans worldwide. Lollapalooza began as a touring festival, visiting multiple cities across the United States. However, it faced financial difficulties in the late 1990s and early 2000s, leading to its cancellation in 2004. The festival returned in 2005 as a weekend-long event in Grant Park, Chicago. In November 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of the former South African President's (1994-1999) contribution to the culture of peace and freedom. The day falls annually on the anniversary of his birth, July 18, 1918. Mandela died on December 5, 2013. Restless Leg Syndrome Education & Awareness Week raises awareness of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), or the gnawing feeling in the legs when a person is about to sleep. The sensations include burning, creepy-crawling, and tingling, leading to insomnia and uneasiness in the nighttime. While 3-5% of the general population is affected by this condition, women and adults over 65 are the most impacted, at 10-28%. This condition is associated with a lack of iron and folate. The primary objective of this campaign is to improve the nation’s knowledge about the signs, symptoms, complications, diagnosis, and treatment options of RLS.

Robin Hood Festival, Sherwood, (US-OR): July 18-19

These events take the idea of a sister city to a new level. Concurrently, Sherwood, Oregon, and Nottingham, England, hold Robin Hood-themed festivals. In England, Nottingham Archery Tournament & Festival. In Oregon, step back into the 12th century with music, food, knights, and ladies for the Robin Hood Festival. Archers compete in both locations (across the pond), and attendees rejoice. The Sherwood Festival came about in 1956 due to a friendly challenge between the yeoman of Nottingham and the festival president in Sherwood. From the event champion's website: "In February 1956, the President of the Robin Hood Festival Association of Sherwood, Oregon, issued an archery challenge to the yeomen of Nottingham, England. The archers would come from the entire Northwestern part of the United States. To cement their bond with the people of Nottingham, England, Sherwood sent 50 redwood oak trees as a living memorial. In March 1956, England accepted the challenge and immediately started working out the details. The rounds would be a double American 810, and each round would be 90 arrows at the distance of 60, 50, and 40 yards and follow the FITA. equipment rules. In July 1956, a picture of the silver Tiffany bowl trophy donated by the Robin Hood Festival Association was sent to Nottingham, England, along with communication rules during the shoot. Both competitions occurred on the same day, but England was shooting eight hours later due to time differences. Thus went the first competition, and the mayor of Sherwood has sent a new challenge each year since."

Chincoteague Pony Swim (US-VA): July 26-August 1

The annual Chincoteague Pony Swim and Roundup in Chincoteague, Virginia, captures national and local interest as it continues to be a unique spectacle since 1925. Marguerite Henry's popular children's novel "Misty of Chincoteague" details this event. Chincoteague ponies, also known as Assateague horses, are wild horses that inhabit Assateague Island, a 37-mile-long barrier island off the coast of Virginia and Maryland. The pony roundup serves as a population control mechanism and a fundraiser for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, which manages the herds on the Virginia side of the island. Beginning on Saturday in the lead-up to the swim, Saltwater Cowboys, a group of local volunteers, guide the wild ponies from the various parts of Assateague Island into a central pen. The roundup takes place over several days, with the actual swim occurring on the Wednesday of the event. At slack tide (the calm water between tides), the Saltwater Cowboys guide the ponies to swim across the channel from Assateague to Chincoteague Island. The quarter-mile-long swim (10 laps in an Olympic pool) typically takes the ponies about five to ten minutes to complete. Spectators gather to witness this spectacle, and the first foal to touch land is named the "King" or "Queen." This foal is given away in a raffle later in the day. On the day following the swim, an auction takes place. Many of the foals born that year are sold to bidders from around the world, which helps manage the herd population and raises funds for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. Several ponies receive a "buyback" designation. A bidder can win the auction for a buyback pony, earning the privilege of naming the pony, but the pony itself is returned to Assateague to live out its life in the wild, helping to replenish the herd. The event concludes with the ponies swimming back to Assateague on Friday, where they are released to roam freely until the following year's event. For Chincoteague and its visitors, the pony swim and roundup is more than a local custom — it symbolizes community spirit, a celebration of history, and a unique wildlife management strategy. It also provides a considerable economic boost, affectionately referred to as "Chincoteague Christmas," to the local vendors. Daiquiri Day, Ntl.: July 19

National Daiquiri Day celebrates the Cuban invention, the daiquiri, a rum-based drink with lime juice, sugar, and crushed ice. There are two versions of how the daiquiri came to be. VERSION ONE An American mining engineer named Jennings Cox, in Cuba during the Spanish American War, is rumored to have created it and called the beverage after the town of Daiquiri near Santiago, Cuba. In 1902 US Congressman William Chanler brought the drink back to New York. World War II would become the catalyst in taking the daiquiri to the height of popularity. Rum was easy to get in the US then, but vodka and whisky were not. VERSION TWO Constantino Ribalaigua, a bartender at El Floridita in Havana, created the daiquiri. Ribalaigua is said to have been inspired by Earnest Hemingway. This rendition is doubtful due to the timing. However, Hemingway did list the daiquiri as one of his favorite drinks, calling it the ‘Papa double.’ The original cocktail was created by filling a tall glass with cracked ice, sprinkling it with sugar, and then squeezing the juice of 2 limes over the ice, followed by a shot (or two) of white rum. As time progressed, the daiquiri became mixed in a shaker. The modern version uses a blender to mix all the ingredients into a slushy drink, presented with a tiny umbrella garnish.

Feast of the Redeemer (IT)(1577): July 19

In 1575, a plague ripped through Venice, in today's Italy, killing over 50,000 people or one-third of the population. In fear and panic, the Venetians prayed and vowed to build a new church for the Redeemer once the plague passed. On July 20, 1577, they laid the foundation for the city's Church of the Redeemer. Today, Venice celebrates the end of this plague with the Redeemer Festival each year, including a colorful parade of gondolas through the canals of Venice.
