Papankusha Ekadashi (H): October 13

06:20 AM | -
Hindus observe two kinds of Ekadashi: yearly and monthly. Papankusha Ekadeshi is the Ekadeshi of Ashwin Shukla Paksha. Devotees fast for a day. During this celebration, one should worship Padmanabha, the lotus-navel Lord Vishnu. By so doing, Hindus believe one achieves whatever pleasures one desires. Simply by offering humility to Lord Vishnu, the rider of Garuda, one can achieve the same merit gained by performing great sacrifices over time. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

Pastoral Care Week: October 20-26

06:20 AM | -
Organizations and institutions worldwide will recognize the spiritual needs of those we serve and the spiritual care given through professional chaplaincy and pastoral counseling within our communities. Regardless of spiritual, religious, or cultural background, Pastoral Care Week celebrates those who provide spiritual support to others. It is supported by the Coalition On Ministry In Specialized Settings Network: The Network on Ministries in Specialized Settings, whose members provide care in specialized settings such as hospitals, prisons, businesses, industries, long-term care facilities, pastoral counseling centers, hospices, military settings, nursing homes, corporations, congregations of sisters, priests and brothers, schools and universities throughout the world. Many institutions will celebrate Pastoral Care Week by honoring the work and gifts of pastoral/spiritual caregivers locally and internationally, as well as the spiritual needs of those who serve. Among the celebrations are hand-blessing ceremonies for health workers, open houses, poetry jams by clients, lecture series, and luncheons. Pastoral/Spiritual Care week provides a unique opportunity to both have a conversation to address suffering related to loss and trauma and to seek opportunities for strengthening spiritual resilience amid them.

Person's Day (CA)(1929): October 18

06:20 AM | -
On October 18, 1929, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in England ruled in the women's favor on whether women are "persons" according to the law. As persons, women would have the right to vote and the same legal standing as men. The court ruled that women are indeed people. The fight is far from over for humans with XX chromosomes. For example, the Equal Rights Amendment guaranteeing women equal rights with men has never been passed in the United States, despite over 50 years of trying. Throughout the world, women face varying incursions to their rights and personhood, some imposed by religion, some by states and laws, and some through good old fashion misogyny. Currently, due to emerging social movements, even defining what a woman is has become contentious.

Pescatarian Month, Ntl.: October

06:20 AM | -
National Pescatarian Month seeks to build awareness about the health benefits of eating seafood and fish. Pescatarianism is a dietary choice wherein a person eats fish and other seafood but does not consume the meat of other animals. Many pescatarians also eat plant-based foods, dairy, and eggs focusing on the potential benefits of a pescatarian diet, which includes a low-fat content and high protein intake, and the environmental impact of different food choices. Pescatarianism can be part of a healthy and environmentally conscious lifestyle. It's essential to ensure that the seafood consumed is sustainably sourced to avoid contributing to overfishing and damaging aquatic ecosystems. Furthermore, concerns about mercury levels in fish and other seafood mean that it's vital to choose seafood wisely.

Pet Obesity Awareness Day, Ntl.: October 9

06:20 AM | -
The second Wednesday of October is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day, raising awareness about the dangers of pet obesity. Like people in first-world countries, as each year passes, more and more pets become obese every year. Obesity is as harmful to pets as it is to people. Pets don't have the intellect humans do and can't regulate their health if they are overfed. This day aims to teach owners how to love their pets through food without killing them with kindness.
