Noodle Day (2009): October 6

06:20 AM | -
Noodle Day is a celebration of the life and work of Franco-American author Raymond Federman (May 15, 1928 – October 6, 2009). In his book, "Double or Nothing," he frequently referred to noodles in analogies. He was a beloved writer, teacher, and wordsmith, and his fans created this day. Federman was the sort of person who avoided the conventional opening sentence and would probably hate a conventional eulogy. As an author, his work was called "experimental fiction," "surfiction," "metafiction," and optimistic. Federman was fond of calling it "playgerism." His sense of play led to an inspired Noodle Day. That rhymed, but it was an accident. Honest.

06:20 AM | -
Since World War II, hundreds of thousands of men and women have served the United States by building nuclear weapons for the country's defense. Nut Day, Ntl. (US/UK): October 22

06:20 AM | -
National Nut Day, observed in the United Kingdom and the United States, promotes the benefits and needs of Free Trade in producing, packaging, and selling nuts and nut products worldwide. The company, Liberation Foods, is farmer-owned by growers worldwide. Fair Trade means that nut producers get paid at least the Fair Trade minimum for their nuts and receive a Fair Trade premium for every kilogram they sell. The Fair Trade minimum ensures that farmers can earn a decent living from growing their nuts. If the market price is above the Fair Trade minimum, farmers receive at least the market price.

Treating the effects of obesity worldwide is projected to cost US$1.2 trillion per year by 2025. World Obesity Day seeks to promote healthy weight and investment in the prevention, management, and treatment of obesity. It is a call to action for governments and health services. Ochi Day (GR)(1940): October 28

06:20 AM | -
"Ochi!", Greek for "No!" is what the Greeks told Mussolini and his fascist army when Italy tried to invade Greece on October 28, 1940. Ochi, ochi, ochi, Senor Mussolini! The Greeks stood their ground and sent the Italians packing. Consider them the original Antifa (anti-fascists) and as the historical originators of democracy—it's apropos—notably since Mussolini coined the word fascist in 1919 to describe his political party. However you swing it, Ochi Day is a national celebration and includes parades, tributes, and festivities throughout Greece. Image: Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini in Munich, Germany. June 1940. Octopus Day, World: October 8

06:20 AM | -
World Octopus Day celebrates the versatile and intelligent creature known as the octopus. A Cephalopod family member, the octopus, is thus named because they have eight arms. But they also have three hearts and have existed for over 300 million years. The Academy Award-winning film "My Octopus Friend" from 2021 is probably the best way to learn about these fantastic creatures, which can range in size from tiny to huge. Happy World Octopus Day.

Opossum Day, Ntl. (CA): October 18

06:20 AM | -
The opossum is the only marsupial native to North America. Like kangaroos, it carries its children in a pouch, and possums have existed since the age of dinosaurs. Possums benefit the ecosystem immeasurably and should be welcomed in your yard. They eat cockroaches, other insects, snails, mice, rats, fruit, plants, eggs, frogs, birds, snakes, roadkill, and people's food. Unlike rodents, possums have high immunity to disease and tend to be a low health risk for humans, even less than cats and dogs. Opossums tend to be active at night, roaming woods and alleys. Because they have long hairless tails, possums are often mistaken for rats. As stated previously, they eat rats and mice and the horror of city-living cockroaches. Should you find one camping out in your yard, thank your stars; it will keep the pests away.
