The date commemorates August 6, 1960, the anniversary of Jamaica's first president taking office.

Satchmo Summerfest is an annual music festival held in New Orleans, Louisiana, celebrating the life and legacy of jazz great Louis Armstrong, born on August 4, 1901, also known as "Satchmo." Mustard Day, Ntl.: August 2

National Mustard Day is hosted by the National Mustard Museum on the first Saturday in August since 1991. Free hot dogs, music, games, other entertainment, and free mustard samplings add to the festivities. In 2010, the event took residence in its permanent location, the Museum in Downtown Middleton, Wisconsin. More than 6,000 mustard enthusiasts attend annually, and National Mustard Day raises thousands of dollars for local charities.

Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day, Intl. (1944): August 2

Established by the European Union Parliament in April 2015, August 2 is International Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day. Previously, it had been noted on December 16 each year. This day draws attention to the Roma survivors, who struggle with persecution and prejudice in many parts of Europe and America. The Nazi Holocaust targeted various groups of people who the eugenics program designated poison to the race. Those targeted included one-quarter of the global Jewish population, over 75,000 mentally ill and disabled persons, people of color, 2.5 million Catholics and Poles, homosexuals, and the Roma. All those mentioned above were persecuted, interned, and killed. Roma, sometimes called gypsies, travelers, or Romani, like the Jewish population of Europe, lost 25% of their global population, amounting to 550,000 people. And yet, they are rarely mentioned. The Roma were singled out beginning December 16, 1942, when Gestapo commander Heinrich Himmler ordered the relocation of all Roma in European countries to the “family camp” of Auschwitz. The Roma wore black triangles on their sleeves and were rounded up, starved, and executed, often digging their graves before being shot or gassed. With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, more facts about the Roma Holocaust experience emerged. Researchers believe the actual number of Roma killed might be three times what they initially thought, around 1.5 million. International Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of August 2, 1944, when 2,897 Romani, most of them children, elders, and women, were murdered in the “Gypsy camp” at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Tish'a B'Av (J): August 2/3

Tish'a B'Av is a fast observed annually by the Jewish faith to commemorate the destruction of Jerusalem's first and second Hebrew temples. The temple was the center of the Hebrew faith, with the Holy of Holies, the room in which God lived at its center. Its destruction in 70 AD nearly destroyed the religion and forced the Sanhedrin and other religious leaders into hiding. Over the next 125 - 250 years, the priests wrote down the oral traditions of the faith and created the Talmud. The Talmud began in two versions, Jerusalem and the Babylonian. Encyclopedic in a multi-volume collection, the Talmud records the laws and traditions in two parts, the Mishnah and Gemara, and is central to the modern faith. The Talmud's creation formed the third iteration of the religion, based upon rabbinic leadership and philosophy. It is this version we call Judaism today. Tish'a B'Av is considered the saddest day in the Jewish calendar; people fast for 25 hours and read from The Book of Lamentations, which depicts how Jerusalem was destroyed. Four other prohibitions observed during the fasting: No bathing or washing No applying of cream or oils No wearing of shoes No marital relations Tisha'a B'Av is rooted in the story of the Sin of the Spies (Numbers 13:1-15:41). The destruction of the first and second temples occurred on the Av 9 of the Hebrew calendar in the Gregorian years of 586 BC and 70 AD. Created by expert seamstress and entrepreneur Lanetta Sprott of Texas in 2011, National Doll Day is a celebration of dolls and all things related to dolls. The first Sunday of August hosts the event as it is also World Friendship Day. For many children, dolls are often their first best friend. World Friendship Day is a holiday proposed by Hallmark Cards after WWI and later became a national holiday in the US by Congressional Decree in the 1930s. The word "world" was added when the UN inaugurated Winnie-the-Pooh as the official Ambassador of Friendship. Dolls could well be the oldest toy we still play with today. The oldest doll was discovered in an Egyptian tomb 23 centuries ago, in 210 BC. Doll collecting is big business. According to the website "Most Luxurious List," the most expensive doll ever purchased is L'Oiseleur, which sold for $6.25 million. The second is by Madame Alexander, Eloise, which sold for $5 Million. In 2014 the Kämmer & Reinhardt character doll created between 1909 and 1912 sold at auction during 2014 for $395,750. It is believed to be the only one ever made. The most extensive doll collection (outside of the Small World Ride at Disneyland) is owned by Bettina Dorfmann of Dusseldorf, Germany. By 2012 her collection included 15,000 Barbie dolls with an estimated value of over $1.4 million. Throughout Australia in early August, landmarks and buildings are lit up in pink and purple to raise awareness of eosinophilic diseases. National EOS Awareness Week is an Australian awareness campaign and research fundraiser. The following is a description of what EOS is from the American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders' press release: "Eosinophils (pronounced "ee-oh-sin-oh-fills") are a type of white blood cell that helps our immune systems fight off infections and parasites. They also play a role in allergic reactions and inflammatory processes. When a person has elevated numbers of eosinophils in their digestive system, tissues, organs, or bloodstream without a known cause, they may have an eosinophil-associated disease. These conditions are further characterized by the areas of the body in which the eosinophils have accumulated. Examples include the esophagus (eosinophilic esophagitis), stomach (eosinophilic gastritis), and bladder (eosinophilic cystitis). Symptoms of eosinophil disease may vary depending on the area of the body and age. Patients often embark on a long, frustrating journey of seeing many different specialists before a diagnosis is made. Although not commonly life-threatening, these chronic diseases require lifelong treatment and can cause debilitating symptoms. Most subsets of eosinophil-associated disease do not yet have an FDA-approved pharmaceutical indicated for treatment." The United States holds its Eosinophilic event in May.

Exercise with Your Children Week: August 3-9

Let's Move! This day aims to increase opportunities for kids to be physically active, both in and out of school, and to create new opportunities for families to move together. Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where almost 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one-third of all children born in 2000 or later will have diabetes, and many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. Active Families: Engage in daily physical activity: 60 minutes for children and 30 minutes for adults. Active Schools: A variety of opportunities are available for schools to add more physical activity into the school day, including additional physical education classes, before–and after-school programs, recess, and the opening of school facilities for student and family recreation in the late afternoon and evening. Active Communities: Mayors and community leaders can promote physical fitness by increasing safe routes for kids to walk and ride to school, revitalizing parks, playgrounds, and community centers, and providing fun and affordable sports and fitness programs. The US Government previously supported the week-long event, which continues under the stewardship of US Registry of Exercise Professionals.

National Farmers Market Week supports farmer's markets throughout the US and always occurs the first full week of August. Farmer's markets preserve America's rural livelihoods and farmland by providing economical distribution options for smaller farmers and those wishing to test new markets. Furthermore, they stimulate local economies. Growers selling locally create 13 full-time farm operator jobs per $1 million in revenue earned, and farmers that do not sell locally create three jobs per $1 million. Farmer's markets increase access to nutritious food, particularly in cities where access to fresh food is often limited to wealthy neighborhoods. On top of that, farmer's markets are cost-effective. The middle man is eliminated, and the farmer sells directly to the consumer. Farmer's markets are increasingly popular with SNAP families (welfare). Fifty-two percent of SNAP households shop at farmer's markets and direct from farmers today than did in 2011. Perhaps, most importantly, farmer's markets bring the country to their customers. Farmers help educate people about where food comes from and often provide cooking ideas and homemade jams, canned food, and juices. This week is about getting out and getting to know your local farmer's market and benefiting from fresh food at its peak.
