Father Damien Day recognizes Father Damien, born Jozef De Veuster in Belgium on January 3, 1840, was a Roman Catholic priest who spent a significant portion of his life living and working in the Hawaiian island of Moloka'i. He dedicated his days to helping those who lived with leprosy and were ostracized by the larger society. The government forced them to live in quarantine.
After providing much needed spiritual, emotional and physical support for the needy and sick, Father Damien died of leprosy himself in 1889.
For his lifelong dedication to humanity and all his work, the Roman Catholic Church made him a saint.
