Like many societies, the Bangali seek to preserve their language and heritage. Students protested on this day and were killed 1952 when Urdu was declared to official language of neighboring Pakistan. Many people died, but finally the Bengali won the right to speak and have their language (spoken by over 250,000,000 people) as the official state language. February 21st is the day they honor all those who died to preserve the language. It is also the United Nations International Mother Language Day in honor of the sacrifice.
