Chiang Kai-shek (October 31, 1887 - April 5, 1975) was a military leader and politician who fought against communism. With the establishment of the communist government in China in 1949, Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan and continued to lead the struggle against communism until his death in 1975. Chiang Kai-shek is the person responsible for the creation of Taiwan and its separation from China.

As of this writing, only 19 countries and the Vatican continue to have full diplomatic relations with the island country.
