On August 19, 1839, the French government purchased the patent for the Daguerreotype process from Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce. His is the invention that made photography possible. Rather than keep it just for the French people, the government gifted it to the world so that all people, no matter where they lived, would have access to photography. This selfless gift of technology is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the patent acquisition as World Photography Day.
