The Tour de France is an annual cycling event done in stages held in France.
Tour de France is the oldest of the three most prestigious global cycling events. Although the routes may vary, the format remains the same. Cyclists pass through the Pyrenees and the Alps, finishing on the Champs-Elysees. The race lasts for 21 days and covers 3,500 kilometers.
Organized in 1903 as a promotion for L'Auto, a magazine, the Amaury Sport Organization currently champions the event. There are only two times when the race was not held, during the two World Wars.
Winners are determined through the compounded times of their teams (nine riders). The winner is the person with the lowest aggregate time, and that rider gets to wear the yellow jersey.
Considered a UCI (Union Cycliste International) World Tour event, participants are members of the UCI World Teams unless invited by a sponsor.
