Cupcakes were initially cooked in pottery cups called ramekins, teacups, or other small ceramic dishes to facilitate serving cake to multiple people at once.
Eliza Leslie's 1828 recipe for cupcakes, published in her self-named cookbook that year, is the first known reference to cupcakes in print.
Today, cupcakes are a gourmet, multi-million dollar business. The largest cupcake ever created? Weighing in at 2,594 lb (1176.62 kg), this mammoth cupcake claimed the World's Record on November 2, 2011, and was made by Georgetown Cupcake in Sterling, Virginia. The most expensive cupcake ever sold? The $42,000 diamond-sprinkled confection was bought on April 15, 2009, and created by Green Movsessian of Gaithersburg, Maryland.
