Line Dancing, as we see it today, began in the 1970s with the Disco movement. The most famous line dance at the time was "The Hustle."
Line dancing gained popularity in Country Western clubs during the 1980s, gaining new fans through films including "Thelma & Louise." The great appeal of line dancing is you can participate without a partner and still be dancing with a group of people. In the 1990s, "The Macarena" gained popularity.
The nobility of Europe used line dancing with partners going back to Medieval times. Several folk dances, such as the Virginia Reel, also include lines of couples. The difference between the classic forms of line dancing and the modern version is that individuals, rather than couples, make up the lines.
National Line Dancing Week begins annually on the second Monday of September.
