DESCRIPTION:
The US government first organized the Martin Luther King Holiday in 1986 to celebrate the civil rights leader's life and significant contributions to Western society. King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. The national holiday moves to allow for a three-day weekend in the United States.
Dr. Martin Luther King was an American pastor who rose to prominence in the 1950s as a voice for social justice and equal rights. His distinctive auditory style galvanized an entire movement and played a vital role in the 1964 Civil Rights act, which discriminated against persons based on race, ethnicity, origin, religion, or sex as a crime. He is considered one of the most influential people of the 20th century.
Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.
