On Peculiar People Day, we are encouraged to appreciate and honor differences and seek out the peculiar souls surrounding us, even those we ignore, mock, or dismiss. It is a day to celebrate what makes each of us unique.
It’s possible Peculiar People Day began to honor an anniversary within the religious movement known as Peculiar People, Plumstead Peculiars, or Banyardites. The protestant sect was created by James Banyard in the mid-nineteenth century and was known for its pacifism and rejection of modern medicine. The phrase derives from the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament. Today the church is the Union of Evangelical Churches.
