Between 1572 and 1574, the Dutch and Spanish fought a war. On October 3, 1574, under the leadership of William of Orange, the Spanish army fled Leiden, which had been under siege for a year. Over 18,000 people died of starvation or plague during the siege. The removal of Spanish troops ended the war. Relief of Leiden Day is a national holiday.
