DESCRIPTION:
The American Cancer Society sponsors the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November. It encourages Americans to quit smoking and was initiated on November 16, 1977.
Before this, Arthur P. Mullaney recommended people stop smoking and donate the proceeds to a local school.
In 1974, Lynn R. Smith of the Monticello Times of Minnesota promoted a "Don't Smoke Day."
