I Am Not Going to Take It Anymore! Day: January 7

06:20 AM | -
I'm Not Going to Take It Anymore! Day is a day is your day to take a stand. Toss that table. Throw a temper tantrum. Resolve to take action and change your situation. If procrastination has been your forte, today is the day to let it go for good. The saying was made famous by the character Howard Beale in the 1975 film "Network." He prefaced it with "I'm mad as hell and …" This day does not appear to be an anniversary.

Idiotarod, (Multiple Dates/Cities): January 25*

06:20 AM | -
Urban Idiotarods or—Idiot-a-rod—are urban shopping cart races that receive their name from the Iditarod, the 1,000-mile dog-sledding race in Alaska. The storied Iditarod wasn't amused and sued, so it became the Idiotarodorama NYC in New York City. Idiotarods are a funny tradition in which five "idiots" are harassed to a grocery shopping cart/trolley and run through the streets of a city. Sabotage is permitted and encouraged, prompting people to trip each other, throw items and topple obstacles. The event is quite amusing. The first Idiotarod took place in San Francisco in 1994. Still, today you can take part in an Idiotarod in Ann Arbor, Asheville, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Iowa City, New York City, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, Seattle, St. Louis, Toronto, Los Angeles, Vancouver, British Columbia, and Washington, D.C., with new cities added every year. The actual date in each city may vary. The date posted is for the New York City event. INDEPENDENCE DAY IN SUDAN

Sudan’s Independence Day, celebrated annually on January 1, marks the day in 1956 when the country officially gained its sovereignty from British and Egyptian rule. The historic event came after decades of colonial administration and a growing nationalist movement that sought to unite Sudan's diverse population under an independent government.

The roots of Sudan's independence can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After the fall of the Mahdist State in 1898, Sudan became a condominium governed jointly by Britain and Egypt. Despite this dual authority, Britain held the dominant role in the administration of the territory. The colonial government implemented policies that emphasized regional and ethnic divisions, particularly between the northern and southern parts of the country.By the 1940s, Sudanese leaders began to organize politically, advocating for greater autonomy and eventual independence.

The formation of political parties such as the Umma Party and the National Unionist Party (NUP) reflected the growing desire for self-rule. These movements gained momentum after World War II, as global decolonization efforts inspired Sudanese activists.Negotiations for independence began in earnest in the early 1950s, culminating in an agreement for self-determination. In December 1955, the Sudanese parliament unanimously passed a resolution declaring independence.

On January 1, 1956, the Republic of Sudan was formally established, and the Sudanese flag was raised in Khartoum, replacing the Union Jack. The first years of independence were marked by challenges, including managing the country's vast ethnic and cultural diversity and addressing inequalities between the north and south. These issues would later contribute to prolonged periods of civil conflict.

Nevertheless, Sudanese Independence Day remains a symbol of national pride and a testament to the resilience and determination of its people. Each year, the day is commemorated with parades, cultural performances, and public gatherings, celebrating the rich heritage of Sudan and its journey to self-rule. It serves as both a reflection of the country’s historical struggles and a reminder of the ongoing efforts to build unity and progress.

International Day of Women in Multilateralism: January 25

06:20 AM | -
International Day of Women in Multilateralism is an observance that recognizes and celebrates the contributions of women in multilateral forums and their roles in diplomacy, international negotiations, and global governance. This day aims to highlight the importance of gender equality in international relations and decision-making processes. The establishment of this day reflects the global commitment to the principles outlined in documents such as the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace, and security. These documents advocate for women's increased participation at all decision-making levels, including in international institutions. The purpose of the International Day of Women in Multilateralism is multi-fold: it serves to acknowledge the progress made in advancing the role of women in multilateralism, to advocate for the removal of barriers to their full and equal participation, and to underscore the need for their perspectives in fostering sustainable peace and development. Activities surrounding this day may include panel discussions, workshops, and campaigns that focus on the achievements of women diplomats and international civil servants. Such events provide a platform for sharing experiences, best practices, and strategies for increasing women's participation in multilateralism. The day also serves as a reminder of the work necessary to achieve gender parity. Women continue to be underrepresented in many areas of international relations. The International Day of Women in Multilateralism emphasizes the need for continued efforts to empower women and ensure their voices impact all aspects of global policymaking.

Introvert Day, World: January 2

06:20 AM | -
Extroverts, who love attention and are easy to spot in a crowd, are approximately 60% of the population. Introverts tend to be quiet in public and are often unseen. Through quiet observation, introverts see and hear a lot. Therefore, after a month or so of socializing, family and holidays, introverts need a day to rest and recharge. Beginning in 2011, January 2 is set aside to celebrate the quietly powerful members of society and give them the greatest gift of all: relaxation.

Irish Coffee Day, Ntl: January 25*

06:20 AM | -
Irish Coffee Day in January is one of two such events. The second is November 10 and marks the 1952 anniversary of Irish Coffee arriving in the United States and becoming one of the world’s most beloved cocktails. The original recipe for Irish Coffee goes like this: “Cream as rich as an Irish brogue; coffee as strong as a friendly hand; sugar sweet as the tongue of a rogue; and whiskey smooth as the wit of the land.” Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco was the first to serve Irish Coffee on November 10, 1952. Joe Sheridan, a bartender, is the mixologist. Stanton Delaplane is the journalist who discovered the drink in Ireland and brought the secret formula back to the US. The original Irish Coffee is believed to have been first served at the flying boat terminal in Foynes, Ireland, sometime during the winter of 1943. Isra'a Wal Mi'raj (M)(621 AD): January 26/27

06:20 AM | -
According to Islam, Isra and Mi'raj are the two parts of the Night Journey, which the prophet Mohammad undertook during a single night in the year 621 AD. The Qu'ran states he traveled from Mecca to Jerusalem, then to heaven, and back to Mecca in one night. Marking this journey by Mohammad is one of the most important events in the Islamic Calendar. On Isra and Mi'raj, Muslims believe the prophet traveled from Mecca to the farthest mosque on earth, where he led other prophets (including Jesus Christ, Abraham, Moses, and others) in prayer. He then ascended into heaven to speak with God, where He revealed to Mohammed additional revelations, including the proper way to pray, when to pray and how often to pray—the ritual observant Muslims follow five times a day facing Mecca. The mosque he traveled to is marked today by Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, also known as the Dome of the Rock. Muslims believe it was from this point that the prophet Mohammed was lifted into heaven to speak with God. Islamic scholars argue whether this was a physical or spiritual journey. Whether his soul or person, it is believed he rode a stallion named Buraq to meet God. The prophet Mohammed died ten years later in 632 AD. PLEASE NOTE: Islamic holidays are determined in Mecca by the moon's position and can occur a day earlier or later than posted.
