ABOUT COLOR THE WORLD ORANGE DAY® Color the World Orange Day®, observed on the first Monday of November, is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), a chronic pain condition. The day brings global attention to CRPS, also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), and seeks to support those who suffer from this debilitating condition. CRPS includes severe, persistent pain that typically affects one limb after an injury but can spread to other body parts. The pain is often described as a burning or "pins and needles" sensation and is usually disproportionate to the severity of the initial injury. The cause of CRPS is not well understood, and there is no cure, making awareness and support critical for those living with the condition. Color the World Orange Day® was initiated by a group of CRPS patients and their supporters who sought to create a unified day of awareness across the globe. The color orange was chosen for its brightness and visibility, symbolizing hope and strength in a challenging condition. Participants often wear orange clothing, organize events, and share information about CRPS on social media using the hashtag #CRPSORANGEDAY. Iconic landmarks are also lit in orange to show solidarity with CRPS sufferers. This global event offers an opportunity to educate the public about CRPS, advocate for more research and better treatment options, and provide community support for those affected. The day emphasizes the need for early diagnosis and effective management, which can significantly improve the quality of life for those with CRPS. Color the World Orange Day® also aims to foster a better understanding of CRPS among healthcare professionals. Education and awareness can lead to improved care, empathy, and support for patients who often face challenges in finding effective treatment and understanding from others.

Come and Take It Day (1778): November 25*

"Come and Take It!" was a rallying cry during the American Revolution and later turned into the motto of the Tea Party. Tradition states the words were first spoken by Revolutionary War hero Lt. Col. John Mc Intosh, commander of Fort Morris at Sunbury. Mc Intosh shouted the challenge: "Come and take it!" to the British fleet arriving on November 25, 1778. The ships sought to force the fort to surrender, and a standoff resulted in the British leaving temporarily. However, they returned in January 1779 and managed to take the fort then. Come and Take It! has come to epitomize American chutzpah and dogged defiance. This event is one of two Come and Take it Days, with the first based upon an event in 1835. The phrase "Come and Take It!" was first used in 480 BC in the Battle of Thermopylae by King Leonidas of Sparta against the Persians.

The awards feature multiple categories, including "On the Land," "Under the Sea," and "In the Air," to name a few. Each category encourages photographers to submit candid shots of animals in humorous situations or poses. Entrants come from around the world; the competition has grown in popularity since its inception. Winning images have been featured in international media, emphasizing both the photographers' talent and the animal subjects' charm. The competition concludes with an annual awards ceremony. In addition to category winners, an overall winner receives the title of "Comedy Wildlife Photographer of the Year." The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards, with its unique blend of humor and conservation messaging, has become a favorite among both professional and amateur photographers globally. EVENT HISTORY The history of World Conjoined Twins Day is relatively recent, with its establishment driven by a need to bring global attention to the unique circumstances of conjoined twins. The day serves multiple purposes: —Promoting understanding and acceptance —Highlighting the medical advances in separation surgeries —Supporting families and healthcare professionals involved in the care of conjoined twins SAUDI ARABIA'S LEADERSHIP IN CONJOINED TWIN SEPARATIONS Saudi Arabia has emerged as a global leader in conjoined twin separations, thanks to its advanced medical facilities and the commitment of its healthcare professionals. The country's success in this area originates from the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program, based at the King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital in Riyadh. The program, established under the patronage of the Saudi government, has conducted numerous successful separation surgeries since its inception in 1990. Surgeries are paid for by the government of Saudi Arabia, not the families of the children. Once identified, the Kingdom brings suitable patients and their families to Saudi Arabia, performs the operations, pays their expenses and supports them through recovery regardless of race, religion, nationality, social status, gender or economic status. Saudi Arabia's program is renowned for its multidisciplinary approach, involving specialists in pediatric surgery, anesthesiology, cardiology, neurosurgery, and other fields to ensure comprehensive care for conjoined twins. DOCTOR ABDULLAH AL-RABEEAH Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, the prominent Saudi pediatric surgeon, is a pivotal figure in this program. Dr. Al-Rabeeah has led the majority of complex separation surgeries and is internationally known for his expertise and dedication. Under his leadership, the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program has become a beacon of hope for families worldwide. NOTE: This writer, LEEP's founder, was fortunate to spend two hours interviewing Dr. Al-Rabeeah in 2008 at the National Guard Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We visited two families whose children had been successfully separated, speaking to the proud parents and learning about the program. Not only is he brilliant, but he is also a warm, wonderful, and caring person. He and I are pictured above in the masthead image for this event. UNDERSTANDING CONJOINED TWINS Conjoined twins are identical twins whose bodies are physically connected at birth. This rare phenomenon occurs when a single fertilized egg fails to separate into two individuals completely. The degree and location of the connection vary, with common sites including the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. LIFE AS A CONJOINED TWINS Life for conjoined twins can be challenging. They may face physical limitations, medical complications, and social stigma. Daily activities, mobility, and personal space are significantly affected, requiring unique adaptations and support. Psychological and social support is essential for their well-being, and many conjoined twins develop strong, interdependent bonds that help them navigate these challenges. SEPARATION OF CONJOINED TWINS The possibility of separation depends on the type and extent of the connection and whether the twins share vital organs. Approximately 60% of conjoined twins can be successfully separated, though the complexity of each case varies. Successful separation surgeries often require extensive planning, advanced medical technology, and a skilled multidisciplinary team. World Conjoined Twins Day aims to illuminate the lives of conjoined twins, celebrate medical advancements, and encourage a supportive and inclusive society. Raising awareness and understanding hopes to improve the quality of life for conjoined twins and their families worldwide.

Cookie Monster is a blue furry character whose famous line is "Me want cookie." He was initially drawn to sell snack foods for General Mills and filmed in the 1966 "Wheels, Crowns and Flutes," which never aired. He was one of three drawings put forth by Henson at the time. ABOUT COP30 IN BRAZIL With 197 Parties, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has near universal membership and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep a global average temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. All agreements under the UNFCCC aim to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system in a time frame that allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.

Over the past few decades, an increasing percentage of parents have been donating their children's cord blood or enrolling in family banking in hopes that stem cells from birth may be able to treat disease or save lives in the future.
