Formerly Hunger Awareness Week in Canada, Hunger Action Month became a month-long event in 2018 during the entire month of September. The month raises awareness of Canada's solvable hunger and food insecurity problem. Food banks across the country hold events to tell the story of their work and share the stories of Canadians needing assistance from food banks. Food Banks Canada, along with its provincial members and food banks across the country, is asking all Canadians to mark Hunger Action Month by positively impacting the issue of hunger across the country.

Hunger exists in every county in the U.S., affecting 48 million Americans, including 15 million children. The Feeding America nationwide network of food banks believes that hunger IS solvable, and we’re leading the fight to end it. We are asking everyone in America to take action to fight hunger in their community all month long. Whether by advocating and raising awareness, volunteering, or donating, you can find the right way to make a difference during Hunger Action Month. Together, we can solve hunger.

Hurricane Season Peak: September 10

The peak of the Hurricane Season is on September 10. By then, the worst storms of the year have usually passed, averaging three heavy hurricanes hitting the US before this date. It's common for strong storms to also hit in the second half of September. Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones are nature's most powerful and destructive phenomena. They're the same thing, with location determining which word is used to describe it. Hurricane is the word for these storms in the Atlantic and northeast Pacific Ocean near Japan and SE Asia. If it occurs in the northwest Pacific Ocean, we call it a typhoon. If it occurs in the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean, it is called a cyclone.

September 22, 1903, Italo Marchiony filed patent #746971 for the first ice cream cone. The ice cream cone patent was granted on December 15 of that same year. Thanks to Marchiony, the ice cream was now portable. The rest is history.

National Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) Awareness Month is organized annually by the Platelet Disorder Support Association (PDSA) since 2010. ITP is a disease identified by a low presence of blood cells and difficulty bleeding. The PDSA offers an extensive array of materials to help you educate about ITP and its treatment and prevention. PDSA also provides comprehensive support services to patients and health providers.

Iguana Awareness Day, Ntl.: September 6

National Iguana Awareness Day (NIAD) was conceived by a group of enthusiasts who disbanded in 2001, but their mission is still active. Their motto and the slogan of NIAD is "Hard to care for... easy to love." NIAD's purpose is to raise awareness about the risks of having an iguana as a pet. Iguanas are lovely reptiles but challenging to take care of, resulting in most lizards dying due to unprepared owners. NIAD aims to change that.

It would take another eight years to win against the monarchists and colonialists to achieve actual independence. September celebrates the victory of patriots over colonizers and the birth of a new nation. September 16 is Independence Day in Mexico. In 1810, Mexicans ended the Spanish rule and colonization of their land, which had lasted for over three centuries. The leader of the uprising was a small town priest named Miguel Hidalgo. Hidalgo rang the bells of his church in Dolores and urged his brethren to stand up and retake their land. They succeeded on this day.
