Foul Ball Week, Ntl.(1921): May 16-21

On May 16, 1921, Reuben Berman caught a foul ball during a Reds and Giants baseball game. At the time, the custom was to return the ball to the teams. Berman didn't want to, so when security came to get it. He tossed it into the crowd as they escorted him out of the ballpark. He then turned around and sued the Giants, whose stadium it was, for pain and suffering, because he couldn't keep the ball. He was awarded US$100 by the courts, far more than the cost of a baseball, teaching the team owners a lesson. Eventually, every club would allow fans to keep any balls that landed in the stands. To mark that sportsman's victory, we celebrate National Foul Ball Week. This event first ran in 2017.

The United Nations General Assembly, recognizing the importance of this ideal, designated May 16th as the International Day of Living Together in Peace. This day is dedicated to promoting peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding, and solidarity, while encouraging nations to adopt reconciliatory measures for peace and sustainable development. This declaration is rooted in the historical context of the United Nations, established after World War II to prevent future global conflicts and ensure international cooperation. Over the years, the UN has focused on fostering a culture of peace and non-violence. This includes the 1997 declaration of the year 2000 as the "International Year for a Culture of Peace," and the 1998 proclamation of the period 2001-2010 as the "International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for Children of the World." In 1999, the General Assembly adopted the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, which became a universal mandate for promoting peace and non-violence. The declaration stems from the belief, encapsulated in the UNESCO Constitution, that peace must be actively constructed in the minds of individuals. It is a dynamic, participatory process necessitating dialogue, conflict resolution through mutual understanding, and cooperation. The Declaration also underscores the need to eradicate all forms of discrimination and intolerance, thereby promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms without any distinction based on race, sex, language, religion, or other factors.

The fundamental causes of deforestation are clearing land for agriculture, logging, urban expansion, and natural events, including fires, floods, and over-grazing. Seventy percent of the world's animals and plants depend upon forests to live, and forests wouldn't exist without trees. Today is the day to honor all that trees contribute to this planet. Road Safety Week, Canadian (CA): May 16-22

Midway through Aggressive Driving Month, the Canadian Safety Council chooses one week to intensify its focus on younger drivers and fostering safe driving habits. According to Transport Canada, young driver, and passenger fatalities continue to be very noticeable in motor vehicle collision statistics. Nearly 23 percent of motor vehicle fatalities were 15 to 24 years old's in 2010, even though this age group makes up only 13 percent of the Canadian population. Put another way, over 500 young people are killed each year in road crashes in Canada, and a further 40,000 are injured, many seriously. Areas to focus on improving safety among young drivers include seatbelt use, impaired driving, and distracted driving.

Romani Resistance Day, International (1944): May 16

It was on this day, May 16, 1944, that the Romani people of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, starving and gaunt, rose against their Nazi captors and resisted, refusing to go to the gas chambers without a fight. Most people are aware of the Nazi Holocaust and what happened to millions in Europe because of it. The coverage of the Jewish victims, who constituted half of those killed and persecuted, has been well documented. But who was the other half? The Nazis targeted groups they deemed unfit to their social ideals, including over 75,000 mentally ill and disabled, people of color, 2.5 million Catholics and Poles, homosexuals, and the Romani. The Romani are sometimes referred to as Gypsies, Travelers, or Roma. Like the Jewish population of Europe, the Romani lost 550,000 people, 25 percent of their total population. And yet, they are rarely mentioned. The Roma wore black triangles on their sleeves instead of yellow stars. Romani were rounded up, starved, and executed, often digging their graves. With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, more has been revealed about the Romani holocaust experience. Researchers believe the number of Romani killed may exceed three times what they initially thought. August 2 is International Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day. This day draws particular attention to the Roma survivors struggling with persecution and prejudice in many parts of Europe and America.
