Self-University Week: September 1-7

Created in 1989, Self-University Week seeks to awaken the autodidact in each of us. Whether you've made it through high school or achieved a Ph.D., you've probably figured out that education starts after you graduate. People constantly learn, which is as necessary for our health as our quality of life. The first seven days of September each year remind people to learn something new and embrace the unexpected. Are you looking for ideas? Visit your library and find a new topic to discover. Play the Devil's advocate. Think of a topic for which you are passionate. Some hot-button issues include immigration, abortion, guns, Israel, the death penalty, climate sciences, etc. Now spend the week learning about the other side and their arguments. Choose a country you've never visited but would like to. Research it and create an action plan to get there one day. Spend the week at different restaurants representing different cultures (nobody said eating isn't part of learning). You can also do this with beers and wines and explore the world's tastes or music. Choose something new and different to learn. This week's idea is to expand your knowledge, challenge conventions, and improve your understanding. Have fun with it!

One in three households would have immediate trouble paying living expenses if the primary wage earner died, according to the 2016 Insurance Barometer Study by Life Happens and LIMRA. And the study also found that 40% haven't bought life insurance or more because they're unsure how much or what type to buy. This industry-wide campaign aims to educate Americans about life insurance's importance and help them get the coverage they need.

The stranger who lets you go first in line at the pharmacy—the neighbor who waves from across the street. We want to hear more about the simple things you and others do to play a part in your neighborhood. Submit a story about a neighbor who inspires you, and we'll share some favorites and recognize them on National Neighbor Day, September 28th. We've seen the power neighborhoods have when we tap into them — especially in unprecedented times like these. We've been moved by the change that can come from the smallest neighborly gestures. Neighbor Month is a time to celebrate how neighbors have come together in ways big and small, as so many have faced difficult challenges this year.
