On September 3, 1783, the American Revolution officially ended with the signing of the Paris Treaty of 1783. Also known as the War of Independence, it was a conflict between 13 North American colonies and the British Crown. The war started with skirmishes between militiamen and the British troops in Lexington and Concord in 1775 before becoming a war by the following summer. Colonial troops received aid from the French Army, turning the conflict from a civil war into an international war. Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781, was the decisive battle. However, active hostilities did not cease until April 15, 1783. In September, the English and American governments signed the treaty ending the conflict. The treaty defined the sovereignty of the United States, bounded by Canada in the north, Florida to the south, and the Mississippi River to the West.

Sankashti Chaturthi (H): September 3

In the Hindu faith, Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha. Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) is observed on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan (the sight of the moon). Prayers to Lord Ganesha precede the breaking of the fast. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. California Wine Month celebrates the annual harvest with tastings, festivals, concerts, and food pairings throughout the state. California's vintners and growers enhance the state's lifestyle, economy, and culinary pleasures. This event was first declared in 2017 by Governor Brown of California, and September draws millions of tourists to California's wine regions each year. A SHORT HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA WINES California's first vineyard was planted in Mission San Bruno, today's Baja California Sur of Mexico, by Jesuit priest and Italian Eusebio Francisco Kino in 1683. Drought forced Kino to abandon San Bruno within two years of its establishment. By 1768, Spain's King Charles III expelled all Jesuits from New Spain, granting administration of the missions to the Franciscan order of monks. Concurrently, Catalan Franciscan friar Junïpero Serra embarked on his historic expedition to Alta California (today's Southern California), establishing the first mission in San Diego in 1769. As with other missions, wine production assisted in supporting the operation. Within a decade, viticulture flourished. The first winery, not part of a mission, was established at Mission San Gabriel. Californian grapes were of a hardy, disease-resistant strain that came to be known as the "mission grape," a variety still used in some fine California wines and sherries today. During the 19th century, Americans and Europeans arriving in California expanded viticulture north and east. They brought grape varietals and winemaking traditions from various parts of the Old World. The "good pirate" Joseph Chapman, captured in a raid on Monterey in 1818, settled in California after his release from prison. He founded the territory's first commercial vineyard in Los Angeles in 1824. Frenchman Jean-Louis Vignes introduced French vines in the 1830s, and his product quickly surpassed the mission-grape wines in quality. Credit for the incredible diversity of Vitis Vinifera Grape is attributed to the Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy. He introduced scores of varietals, including the Zinfandel, one of the most iconic California wines. Haraszthy founded the Buena Vista Winery, the oldest continually operating winery in the state, established in Sonoma in 1857. A former employee of Haraszthy, Charles Krug, is credited with founding the first commercial winery in Napa Valley in 1861. Grapevine cultivation in Napa Valley began in 1836 by the early settler George Calvert Yount in today's Yountville. Native Californian grapes grew freely on his property, so Yount decided to try his hand at viticulture. His venture eventually established one of the world's most acclaimed wine-growing regions. The Gold Rush of 1849 and subsequent population booms created a large market for wine within the young state. Foreign markets took note as the quality of California wines improved; California eventually became a top exporter of wine. Captain Gustave Niebaum, a Frenchman, founded the Inglenook Winery in Rutherford in 1879 to produce the state's first Bordeaux. His wines won gold medals at the World's Fair of Paris within ten years. By 1900, California's viticulturists were counted among the world's best. Prohibition between 1920 and 1933 caused tremendous hardship for California's wine industry. Growers replaced wine varietals with table grapes. Another tactic was to ship grape juice concentrate packaged with instructions outlining how to avoid fermentation (to teach home brewing.) As wine is a vital part of Christian and some Jewish observances, shipments of sacramental wine increased. Wineries producing religious wine were permitted to operate. After the repeal of Prohibition, recovery was slow. Americans preferred beer or spirits. Fine wine remained favored by high society and those with Old World and religious traditions despite California wines becoming exceptional by the mid-twentieth century. Sales of fortified wine stymied its success, the high-alcohol versions favored by alcoholics. Marketing changed that. Robert Mondavi and other industry leaders worked hard to change perceptions and reposition wine in American minds. Today, wine is second only to beer as a favorite alcoholic beverage, and California is its largest producer. World Beard Day is believed to have originated over 1200 years ago with the Vikings and is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of September. On World Beard Day, bearded family members get to abstain from work and chores. The beardless members of the family traditionally show their support by waiting on the bearded hand and foot. Today, World Beard Day is about promoting and elevating the global status of the beard. While many countries and cities practice World Beard Day customs specific to their region, shaving on World Beard Day is universally considered highly disrespectful.

Beheading Day, Intl. (1685): September 2

International Beheading Day marks the anniversary of the execution of Lady Alice Lisle on September 2, 1685, at the age of 63. Lady Lisle was part of the English gentry, and her crime was treason. She was found guilty of harboring John Hickes in her residence. Hickes was a preacher and non-conformist (at the time a severe crime) who participated in the Monmouth Rebellion against the king at the Battle of Sedgemoor. At her trial, Lady Lisle insisted she did not know that he was a wanted man and was offering shelter. Despite not knowing she was breaking the law, The Crown declared her guilty of treason, and her sentence was death. What makes Lady Lisle's execution unusual is motive. Evidence later revealed it was a revenge killing, a judicial murder ordered by Judge Jeffreys. The judge was engaged in several disagreements with Lady and Lord Lisle, and presiding over her trial, and passing her sentence, allowed him to settle a score. Today we refer to this as judicial misconduct and, depending upon circumstances, murder. The trial and beheading of Lady Lisle initiated reforms in England promoting the recusing of judges, litigators, government officials, and barristers involved in a trial where bias, personal gain, or affiliation could hamper their ability to uphold the law or serve impartially. Parliament issued Lady Lisle a posthumous pardon due to "the menaces and violence and other illegal practices" of Judge Jeffreys. The last beheading in England occurred in 1747.

Coconut Day, World: September 2

Japan Formerly Surrenders (1945): September 2

September 2, 1945, marks Japan officially surrendering to the Allied Powers. Although the surrender was announced by Imperial Japan almost 20 days earlier, the treaty's signing occurred on September 2. This move led to the end of WWII in the Pacific. By the mid-year of 1945, the resources to make weapons for the Imperial Army were scarce, disabling the Imperial Japanese Navy from producing more weapons and, thereby, reducing the number of operations in the area. The Allied Forces and China called for the surrender of the Imperial Army on July 26, 1945, in the Potsdam Declaration. While the Imperial Army stated that they would not surrender, it was having negotiations with the Soviet Union to have a peaceful surrender with terms more amenable to Japan. However, the Soviets were preparing to attack the Japanese Army in East Asia as agreed with the United States prior, specifically at the Yalta and Tehran Conferences. On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima. By the evening of the same day, President Harry S. Truman called for the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Army. After three days, the Soviet Union invaded Manchukuo, a state occupied by Japan. Later that day, the United States released a second atom bomb over Nagasaki. Emperor Hirohito accepted the Allied terms conceived at the Potsdam Declaration. By August 15, he announced to the entire Empire through a radio broadcast that Japan would surrender to the Allied Forces. It was in the USS Missouri (NN-53) that the official surrender commenced on September 2, 1945.
