Richter Scale Day marks the birthday of physicist and seismologist Charles Francis Richter (April 26, 1900 - September 30, 1985). His and Bent Gutenberg’s 1935 invention, the Richter Scale, is the standard for measuring earthquake magnitude. Richter was born in Ohio but moved to Los Angeles in 1916. He attended the University of Southern California, later graduated from Stanford University, and received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1928.

ABOUT ANTIQUA SAILING WEEK

Antigua Sailing Week started in 1968 when friends and hoteliers got together to hold a regatta (sailboat or yacht race). Antigua Hotel Association sponsored the first Antigua Sailing Week, June 8-15, 1968. Festivities included a three-day ‘Lord Nelson Regatta’ with sailing yachts of up to 135 feet in length, power boat races, deep sea fishing, and Sunfish sailing contests.

There was also a two-day race among Antigua’s workboat fishermen. The inaugural Antigua Sailing Week was a huge success and repeated the following year, with dates moved up to May 31 through June 7, 1969. And so it went each subsequent year, with new sponsors coming on board and the program of events growing and evolving.

Morse, the American artist, and inventor who designed and developed the first successful electromagnetic (magnetism caused by electricity) telegraph system using a code of dashes and dots in 1836. He called it Morse Code. Morse was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts April 27, 1791, and died on April 2, 1872.
