TED was created in 1984 by Richard Saul Wurman when he noticed a synergy between technology, entertainment, and design. The first TED included a demo of the compact disc, the ebook, and cutting-edge 3D graphics from Lucasfilm. Remember, this was 1984—the World Wide Web would not be created until 1991, and smartphones would not exist until 2007! Also presenting was mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot who demonstrated how to map coastlines using his developing theory of fractal geometry. TED lost money that first year, and it would take another six before Wurman would give it another shot by partnering with Harry Marks. The second time around, he struck gold, and the TED conference quickly became one of the most anticipated annual events in intellectual and creative circles in the seaside town of Monterey, California. Over the years, it expanded its coverage areas, bringing in the brightest minds from multiple industries and areas of expertise. By 2000, TED grew and went not-for-profit. In addition to the original TED Conference, the non-profit has added the following events services: • TEDGlobal, held in locations around the world • TED Prize, which grants its winners one wish to change the world • TED Talks, an audio and video podcast series Attendance at a TED conference is by application. Each year in the spring, National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) brings national attention to motorist and worker safety and mobility issues in work zones. Since 1999, FHWA has worked with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) to coordinate and sponsor the event. Over the years, other transportation partners have joined the effort to support NWZAW. In addition to a National event conducted each year, many States host their NWZAW events.

The dish was created in the kitchen of the Waldorf Hotel by Wall Street broker Lemuel Benedict in 1894 to cure his hangover.

Emancipation Day (1862): April 16

Emancipation Day marks the anniversary in 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order freeing the 3,100 slaves living in Washington, DC, one of the first steps in ending legal slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation Act of January 1, 1863, is the final document that ended the legal practice of slavery in the US. However, it would continue in the Southern States until the end of the Civil War on May 9, 1865, and until the final group of slaves in Texas learned they were free on June 19, forty days later.

World Voice Day is an awareness campaign focused on maintaining the quality of your voice. The most common issue people encounter is Dysphonia or hoarseness. The American Academy of Otolaryngology notes the following methods that can be used to prevent or alleviate hoarseness: DO: Adequately hydrate by drinking plenty of water daily. DO: Use amplification (microphone or megaphone) in large, noisy spaces can help reduce shouting and voice strain. DO: Rest your voice briefly to prevent fatigue, straining, and overuse. DO: Provide indoor air humidification in dry, arid environments. AVOID: Smoking and second-hand smoke from cigarettes, cigars, and pipes, which irritate your airway, throat, nose, and mouth. AVOID: Overusing or straining your voice by yelling, shouting, speaking over loud noises, and whispering. AVOID: Excessive throat clearing and coughing. AVOID: Alcohol (beer, wine, liquor) and caffeine beverages (coffee, soft drinks) as they can dry the throat resulting in mucous thickening. AVOID: Use of drying medications (some antihistamines, diuretics). This event first ran in 2002.

The day after taxes are due is proclaimed "National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day" by the Dalmatian Corporation. It is time to set aside the stress and have a little fun.
