Blood Pressure Month, Ntl.: May

06:20 AM | -
May is High Blood Pressure Education Month. One in three American adults has high blood pressure, also called hypertension, and that's 67 million people who have to work to check their blood pressure daily. Unfortunately, more than half of people with high blood pressure do not have their condition under control. Blood pressure is normal when systolic pressure (the higher number) is less than 120 mmHg, and diastolic pressure (the lower number) is less than 80 mmHg. People at risk for high blood pressure, often called prehypertension, have systolic pressure between 120 and 139 mmHg or diastolic between 80 and 89 mmHg. High blood pressure means systolic pressure is 140 mmHg or higher or diastolic is 90 mmHg or higher. Talk with your healthcare team about your personal blood pressure goal.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD), marked by the inability to manage emotions, is a serious mental illness affecting nearly six percent of the population, millions worldwide. Symptoms generally occur in adolescence or early adulthood and can be present in familial relationships, business relationships, or both. Signs of BPD include impulsiveness, reckless behavior, and an inability to maintain healthy relationships. BPD often compounds other issues, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and eating disorders. BPD Month is an opportunity to learn about this mental illness, how to best interact with persons suffering, and learn about techniques for managing it.

Building Safety Month, Ntl.: May

06:20 AM | -
National Building Safety Month has been an annual event since 1980 with presidential support since 2011. The following is from that Presidential Proclamation: "Building safety is a critical component of our homeland security, personal and public safety, property protection, and economic well-being. While disasters have had devastating and heartbreaking effects in our country and around the world, modern building safety standards and fire prevention codes help us withstand, mitigate, and rapidly recover from hurricanes, winter storms, tornadoes, earthquakes, and floods. It is our collective responsibility as a Nation—nonprofit organizations and the public and private sectors—to implement effective standards and codes that sustain safe and resilient structures. We need innovation and partnerships at all levels of society to develop transformative breakthroughs in building materials and construction techniques that strengthen the integrity of our homes, workplaces, and commercial facilities. Building safety and fire prevention officials, architects, engineers, design professionals, builders, and others in the construction industry work every day to ensure the sound construction of buildings and the safety of our citizens. Their efforts to construct or retrofit buildings that utilize state-of-the-art safety, energy efficiency, and fire prevention standards are important to our national resilience and our ability to compete in the 21st-century economy. As a resilient Nation, we must continue to do everything in our power to enhance our ability to withstand and rapidly recover from natural and manmade disasters, disruptions, and emergencies." President Barak Obama May 2011

Crohn's & Colitis Awareness Month (AU): May

06:20 AM | -
May is Crohn's & Colitis Awareness Month in Australia. The same event is observed in Canada each November. Crohn's disease can involve any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus but most commonly affects the small intestine and the colon. There may be areas of healthy intestine between areas of diseased intestine. Within a diseased section, Crohn's disease can affect all layers of the intestinal wall. It can lead to the development of complications that are specific to this condition: Strictures (intestinal obstruction or narrowing of the intestinal wall) Abscesses (boils) and skin tags (swollen lumps or 'flaps' of thickened skin occurring just outside the anus). Fistulae (abnormal channels connecting different intestine loops to itself or other body organs). Fissures (ulcerated tears or cracks in the lining of the anal canal), malabsorption, and malnutrition. Sometimes surgery is required to lessen Crohn's Disease, but simple diet changes can often alleviate the problem. This month is about raising awareness of the disease and what people can do to mitigate the effects and improve the quality of their lives.

Cystic Fibrosis Month: May

06:20 AM | -
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation sponsors Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month in May to highlight the growing need for awareness about Cystic Fibrosis (CF). During this time, volunteers and people with CF and their families unite to help shine a spotlight on what CF is and the progress made toward a cure. 1) 30,000 children and adults have CF in the United States. 2) More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene. 3) About 1,000 new cases of Cystic Fibrosis are diagnosed each year. Activities include: Walk in Great Strides, an annual fundraising walk occurring in over 600 locations throughout the United States. Australia also observes May as 65 Roses Month, with 65 Roses Day at the end of May to bring awareness to this disease. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that: Clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and It obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. In the 1950s, few children with Cystic Fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s, and beyond. The symbol of Cystic Fibrosis is the 65 roses.
