This includes the 1997 declaration of the year 2000 as the "International Year for a Culture of Peace," and the 1998 proclamation of the period 2001-2010 as the "International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for Children of the World." In 1999, the General Assembly adopted the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, which became a universal mandate for promoting peace and non-violence. The fundamental causes of deforestation are clearing land for agriculture, logging, urban expansion, and natural events, including fires, floods, and over-grazing. Seventy percent of the world's animals and plants depend upon forests to live, and forests wouldn't exist without trees. Today is the day to honor all that trees contribute to this planet. Mental Health Action Day: May 16 (est)

Created in 2021, Mental Health Action Day is supported by over 1,300 organizations, brands, government agencies, and cultural leaders. May is also Mental Health Month in the United States, and this day is intended to drive the conversation from mental health awareness to mental health action. Mental Health Action Day comes at a critical time. The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected the mental health and well-being of people of color, young people, and LGBTQ+ communities. Studies have found: Four in ten adults have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, compared to one in ten before the pandemic. Fifty-six percent of young adults ages 18-24 reported symptoms of anxiety or depression during the pandemic. Forty-eight percent of Black people reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder during the pandemic versus 42% of all Adults and 40.9% of white people. Communities of color, who have experienced disparate impacts of COVID-19 and the ongoing trauma of systemic racism from police brutality to anti-Asian violence, are also facing more significant mental health challenges than ever before but continue to face challenges accessing mental health care. The cross-sector collaboration calling attention to the great need for support and action to address mental health in the same way we treat physical health needs is groundbreaking. Today's actions are only the beginning, from media and tech companies to nonprofits, consumer brands, government agencies, and cultural leaders. Coalition partners will host a series of activations, from public events featuring experts and activists to employee engagement activities. They will empower people to take initial action to support their mental health needs, whether for themselves or others.

Romani Resistance Day, International (1944): May 16

It was on this day, May 16, 1944, that the Romani people of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, starving and gaunt, rose against their Nazi captors and resisted, refusing to go to the gas chambers without a fight. Most people are aware of the Nazi Holocaust and what happened to millions in Europe because of it. The coverage of the Jewish victims, who constituted half of those killed and persecuted, has been well documented. But who was the other half? The Nazis targeted groups they deemed unfit to their social ideals, including over 75,000 mentally ill and disabled, people of color, 2.5 million Catholics and Poles, homosexuals, and the Romani. The Romani are sometimes referred to as Gypsies, Travelers, or Roma. Like the Jewish population of Europe, the Romani lost 550,000 people, 25 percent of their total population. And yet, they are rarely mentioned. The Roma wore black triangles on their sleeves instead of yellow stars. Romani were rounded up, starved, and executed, often digging their graves. With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, more has been revealed about the Romani holocaust experience. Researchers believe the number of Romani killed may exceed three times what they initially thought. August 2 is International Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day. This day draws particular attention to the Roma survivors struggling with persecution and prejudice in many parts of Europe and America.

How do you get men to take male cancers seriously? You throw The Great Willy Waddle fundraiser! The primary two-kilometer run or walk in Edinburgh, with a brotherly event in London, is a favorite with groups and cancer survivors. Participants wear inflatable male membrane costumes (which participants get to keep). Then all the decked-out inflated willies waddle, jog, or walk the two-kilometer route through Holyrood Park in Edinburgh, Scotland (June), or Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London (September). Willies waddle for sponsorship dollars, with all funds going to support Orchid for research into male cancers and helping those with it. Open to participants aged 16 years or over.
