Wianki Festival, Krakow (PL): June 22-23

The Wianki Festival (Wreath Festival) is a Polish tradition from pre-Christian times featuring the floating of wreaths on the Wisla River in Krakow, Poland. It celebrates the summer solstice and honors Kupala, the goddess of love and the harvest. Additional traditions during the festival include getting your fortune told, jumping bonfires, fireworks, and concerts. The event later became a part of the Christian celebration of Saint John's Night.

Aboriginal Day, Ntl. (CA): June 21

The growing movement for Aboriginal rights in Canadian led to calls for greater recognition of the contributions of Aboriginal peoples to Canadian society. Shortly after the adoption of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood, the leading body representing First Nations in Canada, called for the creation of a yearly "National Aboriginal Solidarity Day" on June 21. Pressure for a national day of recognition continued to grow during the following decade as new ways were sought to bridge the divide between Aboriginal peoples and Canadians, especially in the wake of the 1990 Oka Crisis. In 1995, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended a "National First Peoples Day" to focus on Aboriginal peoples' history, achievements, and contributions in Canada. Later that year, during the Sacred Assembly, Elijah Harper repeated the call for a national holiday to celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal peoples was made. On June 13, 1996, after considerable consultation with Aboriginal organizations, June 21 was officially declared National Aboriginal Day.

ASK Day is about gun safety. It is a day to remind parents, caretakers, and teens to ask, "Is there an unlocked gun in your house?" Safe storage of guns saves lives. Each day in the United States, an average of eight children are injured or killed by an unsecured firearm. 4.6 million children live in homes with unlocked and loaded guns. 20% of children have handled a gun without adult supervision. ASK Day is a safety campaign and awareness campaign. Ask if a home has an unsecured gun. This one conversation may save a life!

Humanist Day, World: June 21

The summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere is World Humanist Day. Sponsored by the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), this worldwide celebration brings awareness to the Humanist movement and its goal of creating a kinder, gentler world based upon mutual respect. This event was conceptualized in the 1980s by the American Humanist Association (AHA), though the dates differ depending on the chapters. It was during the early 1990s that both IHEU and AHA decided to settle for a specific date, June 21.

A full moon occurs when the moon is illuminated by the sun and on the opposite side of the earth. Its ecliptic longitude is 180 degrees. For centuries, people have applied names to full moons to track the seasons and as a point of reference. The names listed below come from Native American and Colonial American traditions passed down through generations. Here are the common names for full moons in each month in the Northern Hemisphere (the Southern Hemisphere doesn't do this tradition): January: Wolf Moon—Named after the howling of wolves during the cold winter nights. February: Snow Moon—Named for the typically heavy snowfall. March: Worm Moon—As the ground thaws, earthworms emerge, attracting birds. April: Seed Moon—Time to plant for the fall harvest. May: Flower Moon—Named for the abundance of flowers in May. June: Strawberry Moon— due to the short harvesting season for strawberries in the northeastern United States. July: Buck Moon—when new antlers grow on male deer (bucks). August: Sturgeon Moon—when sturgeon fish are abundant in North America's Great Lakes. September: Harvest Moon—time to harvest crops. October: Hunter's Moon—game is at its fattest, allowing hunters to stock up for the winter months. November: Beaver Moon—when beavers build their winter dams. December: Cold Moon—long, dark, and cold nights. Full moon names vary between cultures, regions, and traditions; several full moons have alternative names. The above are the most common. A blue moon occurs when two full moons are in a single month, and February is the only month in the year that occasionally does not have a full moon. A blood moon describes a total lunar eclipse.
