Child Labor, World Day Against: June 12

06:20 AM | -
World Day Against Child Labor Day is sponsored by the International Program on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC). This day seeks to raise awareness of the issue of child labor worldwide. Each year focuses on a different theme. In 2015, education as a means to stop child labor was the topic of concentration. IPEC falls under the International Labour Organization(ILO), which created this event in 1992 to eliminate child labor by providing means to countries to strengthen their efforts to combat child labor and promote global awareness of child labor. IPEC is the most extensive operation program of the International Labor Organization.

Falafel Day, Intl.: June 12

06:20 AM | -
The vegetarian favorite, falafel, is believed to have originated in Egypt with Coptic Christians as a substitute for meat during the forty days of Lent. The actual history is unknown, but this is plausible. Today it is a mainstay at Middle Eastern restaurants and a favorite of food truck vendors. Falafel is created from fava beans or chickpeas mixed with spices and deep fried into balls and is often served on flat bread or atop rice, and each country makes its version of this, now an international favorite. International Falafel Day is a grassroots event that has gained popularity online.

He was among those who invaded Normandy during WWII. After the war, he joined NAACP to fight for black people's civil rights. Evers was responsible for gathering evidence and witnesses for the Emmitt Till murder case, a controversial case that brought light to the plight of African Americans living in the Southern United States during segregation. On June 12, 1963, Evers, a white supremacist, was assassinated by Byron De La Beckwith. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. History Day Competition, Ntl.: June 9-13 (est)

06:20 AM | -
History Day is a competition that begins in May. It was created in 1974 "to counter the devaluation of history as a field of study." Students present their research, analysis, and conclusions in one of five formats: a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website. The contest is open to students in junior high and high school. Each year a theme is released, and students and teachers then choose a topic within that theme. Approximately 500,000 students enter annually, and around 2,500 make it to the finals. About 100 participants receive awards ranging from $500 to $2000 in winning categories. Most Americans are unaware that we do not study history in the United States in K-12. We learn social studies. Social studies focus on when, who, and what the event's impact on society, the contributions of individuals, and stories. History includes the why and context of the period it occurred. It requires critical thinking, analysis, and the ability to look at events, trends, and the larger picture dispassionately and absent from current political pressures or trends. Whereas social studies are more about sociology and culture, history is closer to science in its analytical approach to information.

Passover recounts the sparing of death to the firstborn son of the Hebrews by God. Shavuot celebrates the giving of the Torah and the unity of the twelve tribes as one people serving God. Shavuot is celebrated as a single-day holiday in Israel. Traditions include women and girls lighting candles in the evening and public readings of the Torah at the temple.

Albinism Awareness Day, Intl.: June 13

06:20 AM | -
International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) is observed annually on June 13 to raise awareness about albinism, a genetic condition that affects people worldwide, regardless of ethnicity or gender. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on December 18, 2014, proclaiming June 13 as International Albinism Awareness Day. The first official celebration of IAAD took place in 2015. Albinism is characterized by a lack of melanin pigment in the hair, skin, and eyes, resulting in little to no coloration. People with albinism often have pale skin, white or light-colored hair, and eye color ranging from pale blue to brown. They may also experience vision problems and are more vulnerable to sunburn and skin cancer due to their lack of pigmentation. The main objectives of International Albinism Awareness Day are: Raise awareness: The day aims to educate the public about albinism, its causes, symptoms, and challenges faced by people living with the condition. By increasing understanding, IAAD hopes to dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding albinism. Advocate for equal rights: People with albinism often face discrimination, social exclusion, and even violence in some parts of the world. IAAD seeks to promote the rights of people with albinism and ensure they have the same opportunities. Support and celebrate: The day is also an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with albinism and to support them in their endeavors. Various organizations, governments, and individuals worldwide participate in International Albinism Awareness Day by organizing events, seminars, workshops, and social media campaigns to spread knowledge about albinism and advocate for the rights of those affected.
