National Garage Sale Day occurs on the second Saturday of August. Garage sales grew out of a port custom of ship captains, and they sold excess and unclaimed cargo on the docks at a discount in rummage sales. Around the turn of the last century, charities and churches began using the concept of selling second-hand goods in a centralized location to raise money. The US army got into the picture using a similar approach to unload surplus gear and supplies. Post-WWII, with the mass exodus from the cities to the suburbs, individual families began selling off what they couldn’t move from their garages, and an American institution was born. National Garage Sale Day is a grassroots effort in the United States. However, the largest garage sale in the world occurs over an entire weekend and takes place nationwide in Australia, and that event is called the Great Garage Sale Trail.

Lion Day, World: August 10

According to the IUCN, lion populations have declined 43% in the last 21 years (1993 - 2014), with less than 20,000 remaining. World Lion Day is the first global campaign to celebrate the importance of the lion worldwide. Since the dawn of man, the lion has played an integral role in our lives: symbolically, religiously, culturally, economically, and biologically. To lose the lion from our world would be to lose part of our global heritage.

Elizabeth Walker created Middle Child’s Day in 1986 to highlight children often left out. The eldest gets attention because they are the first, and the youngest, quite precocious, gets away with much, leaving the middle child feeling like a footnote. Parents treat their middle children with attention, affection, and honor today, and it is all about the middle.

Paul Bunyan Day (1906): August 10*

Paul Bunyan Day honors the character of literary legend. Paul Bunyan is the giant lumberjack in American folklore. He and his companion, Babe the Blue Ox, are characters in numerous songs and stories popularized by just as many authors. The first known printed story about Bunyan, "Caught on the Run," ran in the Duluth News Tribune on August 4, 1904. Its author is unknown. One of the more notable authors is James MacGillivray, who wrote about Paul Bunyan in "Round River" in the July 24, 1910 edition of the Detroit News. Round River was an expanded version of his first story on Bunyan, which appeared on August 10, 1906, Oscoda Press. Today marks the anniversary of that story.

S'more Day, Ntl.: August 10

National S'mores Day honors the three-ingredient camping treat made of graham crackers, toasted marshmallows, and melted chocolate. The recipe was first published 1927 in the Camping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, the Girl Scout Handbook. Since that first publishing, s'mores have ascended to the status of campfire cooking legend. A personal story from Laura (LEEP’s founder): "I love s'mores, and thankfully they are halal. Soon after arriving in Saudi Arabia, I had about twenty co-workers over to my home for a party. In the weeks leading up, I collected supplies. After a lot of hunting, I found graham crackers in Bahrain, flat chocolate bars (Swiss), and to my surprise, jumbo marshmallows. Luckily, the company commissary had these in stock temporarily; I bought five bags. Supplied, I was ready to try out my new firepit! None of my international friends (Saudi, South Korea, Egypt, Portugal, Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, and South Africa) knew what a s'more was. I trotted out the ingredients, converted several wire hangers into skewers, and started roasting marshmallows. Soon a crowd gathered. "What are you doing, Laura?" Mona, an Egyptian, asked. "Something American you are going to love. Grab the graham crackers and cut that chocolate bar in thirds," I instructed, pointing to the box and bars. Mona cut the bar, broke the graham cracker in half, placed the chocolate on top of one of the two pieces, and then motioned her to bring it to me on a plate. On my wire hanger, the giant marshmallow was turning golden brown. Motioning to the plate with the graham cracker halves and chocolate, I asked, "Bring that here." Removing the marshmallow from the flame, I used the top graham cracker to slide the toasted marshmallow off the wire onto the bottom cracker and chocolate. Viola! Graham cracker, chocolate, toasted marshmallow, graham cracker, or a s’more. “Taste it,” I suggested. She did, and…” Mash’allah! This is so good!” Very quickly, the rest of my wire hanger skewers were sporting large marshmallows over the flame. S’mores were a hit in every language you can imagine, and my five bags, chocolate, and graham crackers quickly disappeared. Food is the best ambassador. I think I might also be responsible for the Eastern Province peanut butter cookie addiction. That’s another story. I never was able to get giant marshmallows at the company commissary again. For some reason, Lulu sold out as soon as they came in.”

Musikfest (US-PA): August 1-11

Musikfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is one of the largest annual non-gated music festivals in the United States. Non-gated means FREE. For ten days in late July or August, Bethlehem fills with music from over a dozen stages featuring rock, jazz, country, folk, and more. Music is just the first course. Food choices abound, including fare from the local Pennsylvania Dutch favorites to international cuisine; Pennsylvania microbrews, spirits, and wine are also available. Of course, Pennsylvania is also known for its homemade crafts, and dozens of booths make souvenir and early Christmas shopping a breeze. In addition to music, Musikfest features visual arts performances, comedy shows, and several interactive experiences. Local businesses offer special deals in town, and the locals support the event. Musikfest is one big family-friendly, affordable party thanks to generous support from banking giant Wells Fargo.

Sturgis Rally (US-SD): August 2-11

If you are a motorcycle enthusiast, your Mecca is Sturgis, South Dakota. Each year over one-half million motorcyclists, their families, and friends gather in the little town of Sturgis for the largest gathering of motorcycles in the world. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was founded in 1938 by a group of Indian Motorcycle riders and has grown into an iconic event that includes live music, festivities, competitions, and a host of other activities. The Great Recession (2008-2012) encouraged people to be more frugal and creative in saving money and reducing waste. Whether rummaging through boxes at a flea market, the clearance rack of a local business, the piles of items at a yard sale, the shelves at off-price stores, or surfing the internet, the hunt for bargains can be just as exciting as the item discovered. Shopping at resale, consignment, and thrift stores supports the recycling movement, and many charities operate. Catchy phrases such as "buy a lamp, create a job" can add deeper personal meaning to the shopping experience. Bartering and trading groups, or similar activities between acquaintances, have emerged as additional ways for people to save money. Created in 1996.

Dental Health Week (AU): August 5-11

The Australian Dental Association champions Dental Health Week. The week is its major annual oral health promotion aiming to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining whole mouth health. 65% of Australians haven’t seen a dentist in the last two years. 50% of Australians brush their teeth only once a day. Nearly 40% never floss nor clean between their teeth. 73% of young people (14-18 years) consume too much sugar. Dental Health Week promotes these key messages: Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Clean in between teeth at least once a day with floss or an interdental brush. Eat a healthy balanced diet and limit sugar intake. Regularly visit the dentist for check-ups and preventive treatment.
