Change a Pet's Life Day: January 24

06:20 AM | -
Change a Pet’s Life Day is about keeping your eyes open for distressed animals. Examples include a dog chained outside that never gets off its chain, a cat abandoned by the side of the road, and a horse neglected and starving. Worldwide, animals are suffering, and you can do something about it. Even if you can’t adopt, you can alert animal rescue in your area to distressed animals or offer to foster one until its forever home is found. Change a Pet’s Life Day promotes the work of animal rescue groups and the well-being of the animals they save.

Throughout the nation, thousands of public and private libraries hold special events on this day, including photography competitions for the best and most creative selfies. Burns Night Supper (UK) (1759): January 25

06:20 AM | -
Burns Night Supper is celebrated every year on January 25 in Scotland and among poetry lovers worldwide. On this night, people honor the life, art, and satire of Robert Burns, considered one of the greatest poets and bards ever produced in Scotland. Burns was born on January 25, 1759, and died on July 21, 1796, at age 37. His closest friends organized the first Burns Night Supper six years after his death in 1802. They gathered, read his poems, sang his songs, ate haggis, and drank to his memory. Lovers of Burns' poetry have been doing the same every year. His most famous works include the following: Auld Lang Syne (The New Year's Song) To a Mouse (Which inspired Steinbeck's title of "Mice and Men") And the collection "Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect." Oh, and if you ever take the citizenship test for the United Kingdom, you will do well to know who Robert Burns is. Yes, you will be tested!

Irish Coffee Day, Ntl: January 25*

06:20 AM | -
Irish Coffee Day in January is one of two such events. The second is November 10 and marks the 1952 anniversary of Irish Coffee arriving in the United States and becoming one of the world’s most beloved cocktails. The original recipe for Irish Coffee goes like this: “Cream as rich as an Irish brogue; coffee as strong as a friendly hand; sugar sweet as the tongue of a rogue; and whiskey smooth as the wit of the land.” Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco was the first to serve Irish Coffee on November 10, 1952. Joe Sheridan, a bartender, is the mixologist. Stanton Delaplane is the journalist who discovered the drink in Ireland and brought the secret formula back to the US. The original Irish Coffee is believed to have been first served at the flying boat terminal in Foynes, Ireland, sometime during the winter of 1943.
