The United Nations was established after World War II to promote international cooperation and respect for human rights. In 1999, the General Assembly adopted the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, emphasizing the importance of promoting peace and non-violence. It recognized that peace requires a positive and participatory process, involving dialogue and cooperation. On October 20, 2010, the General Assembly established World Interfaith Harmony Week to promote mutual understanding and dialogue among people of different faiths. It acknowledged the significance of interreligious dialogue in fostering harmony and cooperation. The core principle underlying all faith systems is the recognition of our interconnectedness and the need for love and support to live in harmony. However, conflicts, intolerance, and messages of hate continue to persist in the world. The International Day of Human Fraternity, proclaimed on February 4 by the General Assembly, aims to emphasize the importance of unity and understanding based on our shared humanity. It calls for intensified efforts to promote good neighborliness and mutual respect among all people, guided by the principles of human fraternity.

The Postal Service is the backbone of communication and a marvel of organization. Thank a Mailman Day, or the political correct Thank your Mail Carrier Day, celebrates the anniversary of the first postal service in the United States. It was instituted through grant by King William and Queen Mary of England in February 1692. The first director of Postal services in the United States, (then the American Colonies) was Thomas Neale and dealt primarily with official correspondences between government offices and the various plantations and businesses. On July 26, 1775, the postal service reverted to control of the colonies with Benjamin Franklin at its head. The first actual post office was created by congress in 1792.

USO Day, (1941): February 4

USO Day marks the anniversary of the founding of the United Services Organization in the months before the United States entered WWII. For many servicemen, especially those on active duty, the USO is a bright spot in an otherwise bleak and scary war. Many of America's greatest entertainers have performed for the USO. USO HISTORY from their site: Supporting America's troops was the first mission of the USO. In 1941, as it became clear that the nation was heading into World War II, several organizations mobilized to support the growing U.S. military: the Salvation Army, Young Men's Christian Association, Young Women's Christian Association, National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board. President Franklin D. Roosevelt created synergy among these agencies by forming the United Service Organizations to provide the emotional support the troops needed. Over time, the USO has evolved, developing new programs and services to meet the ever-changing needs of the troops and their families while holding fast to the original mission. Today, the USO continues to lift the spirits of America's troops and their families and will continue to be there for them until everyone comes home.

Chocolate Fondue Day: February 5

Chocolate fondue is an American invention from 1966, and Chalet Suisse in New York City created it. The restaurant ceased to exist after the late 1980s, but the delicious social dessert has become popular within the past five years (all those Gen Xers like myself who grew up with fondue in the 1970s). The story goes that when Chalet Suisse relocated to fifth and 49th in New York City, the Swiss chocolate manufacturer of a new product called Toblerone was looking for a way to market the chocolate bar. Their publicist Beverly Allen made a sweet fondue from the candy bar. The Swiss people thought she was nuts. Knorad Egi, the Swiss-born chef of Chalet Suisse, didn’t think it was a crazy idea, and chocolate fondue was born.
