Bagpipe Day, Intl.: March 10

International Bagpipe Day was created in 2012 by the Bagpipe Society of the United Kingdom. By its second year, reports were coming from all over the world, ranging from a pipe band performance in an underground cavern in South Africa to a party on an Athenian hill in Greece. Even Nigeria, a country not often associated with piping, got in the game. There are over 130 different kinds of bagpipes played worldwide. On this day, all lovers of the pipes organize local events – talks, lectures, school visits, museum events, pipers’ picnics, concerts, gigs, ceilidhs, and folk balls. International Bagpipe Day hosts the Great Bagpipe Convergence. One of the sweeter, romantic customs in the LEEP Calendar, Bretzelsonndeg in Luxembourg is a Lent tradition occurring on the 4th Sunday of Lent each year. If a young man is interested in a young woman, he gives her a cake in the shape of a knot—aka pretzel. If she is interested in him, she gives him sweets, a decorated egg, or a gift on Easter Sunday. Of course, he must wait three weeks to learn her answer! But there is a hitch. During leap years, ladies give the pretzel cakes and wait three weeks for the men to respond. Awe, love!

Girl Scout Week, Intl.: March 10-16

International Girl Scout Week begins with Girl Scout Sunday and ends with Girl Scout Sabbath on a Saturday. The Girl Scouts have been an organization since March 12, 1912, when Juliette Gordon officially registered the first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia. Traditional celebrations consisted of seven days of service during Girl Scout Week. Taking part in a religious service has been part of Girl Scout Service in the past and continues today. Greenback Day (1861): March 10

Today marks the anniversary of the 1861 issuance of the green currency in the United States nicknamed 'Greenback.' These were demand notes and did not carry interest. A demand note means their value remained constant at the amount printed on them, even today, which was a new concept in American currency. Greenbacks were issued to fund the American Civil War.
