National Peanut Day honors the versatile food. Peanuts are legumes, a vegetable, and a part of the pea family. Despite their name, they are not nuts. According to fossils, peanuts originated in the Zaña Valley of northern Peru about 8,500 years ago, though they've changed from their original consistency through cultivation. By the 15th century, the legume was grown throughout Central and South America and The Caribbean; Spanish and Portuguese explorers brought peanuts to Africa, Europe, and Asia. Eventually, they were introduced to North America through African slaves in the 1700s. Today, nearly 50 million metric tons of peanuts are grown annually, with 50% cultivated in three countries: China, India, and Nigeria. Sudan is the fourth largest producer, followed by the United States at number five. Peanuts are packed with protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, making them a nutritious and affordable staple. Therefore, the next time someone tells you to "Eat your vegetables," pop a peanut. Dry roasted, raw or buttery, veggies never tasted so good! In-breeding and over-breeding are two common causes controlled by spaying and neutering your pet and keeping them safe in your yard. Minimizing threats, whether noise, keeping poisons out of reach, and foods that aren't suitable and poor quality water, can also help. Making sure your pet has its vaccinations and isn't exposed to parasites will also make a big difference in its health and that of any offspring.

Pickles for Snack Day celebrates the popular sweet or tangy snack food and garnish. Cucumbers, the raw vegetable of pickles, originated in India. Near 2030BC, cucumbers were brought into the Tigris Valley and began to make their way into Europe. Pickling is a food preservation process of marinating vegetables in vinegar and spices. By 805BC, philosopher Aristotle sang their praises as a healthy and healing food. In North America, explorers discovered wild cucumbers growing in Canada in 1535. By 1606, pickles were being produced commercially in the future United States. Over six billion pounds of pickles are consumed annually in the United States alone.

Uncle Sam Day (1813): September 13

Today marks the anniversary of the creation of "Uncle Sam" in 1813. Uncle Sam is one of the most recognized symbols of the United States. During the War of 1812, soldiers stationed in Troy, New York, received rations of meat stamped with a "U.S." The supplier was Samuel Wilson. Eventually, soldiers began referring to the meat deliveries as Uncle Sam, the legend goes, and an icon was born. The first image of Uncle Sam premiered on this day in 1813. But, it would not be the last. The image of Uncle Sam in a white beard wearing a stars-and-stripes suit originated with Thomas Nast in 1869. You know his work. Nast is one of the first prolific political cartoonists. He created the image of the modern Santa Claus as a jolly bearded man in a red suit, the donkey for the Democratic Party, and the elephant for the Republican Party. However, the most famous representation of Uncle Sam was inspired by a British recruitment poster and came from the mind of James Montgomery Flagg in 1917. In this WWI poster, Uncle Sam is seen wearing a tophat and a blue jacket and is pointing straight to the viewer stating, "I Want You for the U.S. Army." The poster was effective and has become part of American iconography. In 1961, Congress issued a resolution recognizing Uncle Sam of Troy, New York, and erected a monument in his honor.

Mawlid an-Nabi, or Mawlid in Islam, is the day set aside for the birth of the Prophet Muhammed. Practicing Muslims usually follow the mention of his name with "Peace be upon him" or the initials PBUH. Mawlid occurs on the 12th day of Rabi' al-Awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar, which is why it moves from year to year. The founder of the faith of Islam lived from 570 AD - June 8, 632 AD. His full name was Abū al-Qāsim Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim. His name is quite long, a tribal tradition in Arab and Persian cultures. Each "ibn" designates "son of" in parental lineage. The Prophet rests in Medina, Saudi Arabia, beneath the mosque known as "The Green Dome." Typically Muslims do not celebrate this day. Instead, it is a day of reflection and thought.
