Battle of Britain Week encompasses the anniversary of the Battle of Britain's turning point. The battle occurred during the summer and fall of 1940. By this time, World War II approached its first anniversary, and Hitler's forces had over-run much of Europe. Britain was the final prize he wanted, and he set his sights on the island nation. Up until this time, the German military appeared to be unstoppable. Hitler believed the air assault on Britain in July of 1940 would be easy. However, the English had a secret weapon, the Dowding System, which allowed the Brits to deploy their air force throughout the country, back by radar. The Dowding System provided early warning of attacks, allowing the Royal Air Force to engage the Luftwaffe effectively. On September 7, London became the target of the bombing campaigns. By September 15, 1940, the British Royal Air Force got the upper hand. Though the battle would continue into October, today is the day it became clear to the German high command that taking Britain would require more resources and time. They eventually withdrew, and Hitler's forces never conquered Britain. Within 14 months, the United States would enter the war.

Initially, it was a meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors; the G20 Leaders' level was introduced in 2008 in response to the global financial crisis. The primary purpose of the G20 is to coordinate policy responses among the major economies to ensure global economic stability and sustainable growth. It also focuses on other significant global issues, such as climate change, labor issues, international security, and development. The G20 consists of 19 individual countries, including major economies like the United States, China, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, India, and Brazil. The European Union is also a member. Its meetings occur regularly throughout the year at various levels, including finance, foreign, and other functional ministers. The Leaders' Summit, attended by the heads of state or government of the member countries, is the most prominent event and usually occurs annually. The leadership of the G20 rotates annually among its members, and the country holding the presidency is responsible for setting the agenda for the year and hosting the Leaders' Summit. The presidency follows a fixed sequence, and each year a different country takes the lead in coordinating the group's work. The G20 has played a crucial role in responding to global challenges. During the 2008 financial crisis, the G20 coordinated fiscal and monetary measures to stabilize the global economy. More recently, it has focused on sustainable development, global health (including COVID-19 response), and climate change. While the forum has been instrumental in coordinating international economic policy, it also faces criticisms. Some argue that the G20 needs more representativeness, excluding many smaller and poorer nations. Others criticize the need for enforcement mechanisms, as the G20's decisions are non-binding, and member countries are not obligated to implement the agreed-upon policies. However, the G20 Summit is vital in global economic governance, providing a platform for dialogue and cooperation among the world's leading economies. Its broad agenda reflects the complexity of global economic and social challenges, and its decisions and initiatives often have significant implications for international policies and trends. By fostering collaboration across various domains, the G20 seeks to promote a stable and prosperous global economy, but it continues to face challenges in inclusivity and effectiveness.

The Japanese Grand Prix is a prestigious Formula One (F1) motor racing event held in Japan. It has been part of the F1 World Championship calendar since 1976, with the exception of a few years. The race has been held at two different circuits over the years: the Fuji Speedway and the Suzuka Circuit. The first Japanese Grand Prix took place in 1976 at the Fuji Speedway, located near the base of Mount Fuji. After the 1977 race, the event was discontinued due to safety concerns and financial issues. The Japanese Grand Prix returned to the F1 calendar in 1987, this time at the Suzuka Circuit. The Suzuka Circuit, located in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture, is a 5.807 km (3.608 miles) long track with a unique figure-eight layout. The circuit is known for its challenging combination of high-speed sections, technical corners, and elevation changes, which test the drivers' skill and car performance. Iconic corners like the high-speed 130R and the tight hairpin turn contribute to the circuit's reputation as a demanding and exciting track. Over the years, the Japanese Grand Prix has produced many memorable races and moments that have played a crucial role in the outcome of the World Championship. Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost had their infamous collisions in 1989 and 1990 at Suzuka, and Michael Schumacher secured his first World Championship for Ferrari in 2000 at the same track.

Irish Potato Famine Begins, (IE)(1845): September 9

What would become known as the Great Irish Famine was first reported on this day, September 9, 1845, in the Dublin Evening Post. A fungus destroyed over 30% of the potato crop in Ireland in the first year, in 1845. However, this was not a one-year event. In 1846, 1848, and 1849, nearly the entire crop succumbed to disease, starving the nation of its most basic food. Over 1 million people died, and another 1.5 million emigrated to the United States, Canada, and Australia. The Great Potato Famine became one of the largest waves of immigration from a single nation in history for each destination. By the time of the US Census in 1850, 40% of all foreign-born residents in the United States were Irish. The crisis abated in 1852, mainly because so many people had died or left. Though the fungus was responsible for the initial crop destruction, politics and greed prolonged it for years. Ireland is a fertile country, and crops of barley and oats continued to grow. Livestock continued to thrive, and these products were exported for more money than they could bring locally, leaving the Irish people without food and the landowners, who were English, wealthier. The Great Potato Famine ignited the growing animosity between Ireland and England. In its wake, a determined resistance and independence movement arose, resulting in the island's division. Ultimately, the struggle spanned over a century ending with the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. Today, Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, and the Irish Republic is a sovereign nation.

Line Dancing Week, Ntl.: September 9-15

Line Dancing, as we see it today, began in the 1970s with the Disco movement. The most famous line dance at the time was "The Hustle." Line dancing gained popularity in Country Western clubs during the 1980s, gaining new fans through films including "Thelma & Louise." The great appeal of line dancing is you can participate without a partner and still be dancing with a group of people. In the 1990s, "The Macarena" gained popularity. The nobility of Europe used line dancing with partners going back to Medieval times. Several folk dances, such as the Virginia Reel, also include lines of couples. The difference between the classic forms of line dancing and the modern version is that individuals, rather than couples, make up the lines. National Line Dancing Week begins annually on the second Monday of September.

Protect Education from Attack, Intl. Day to: September 9

Children worldwide are being endangered by ongoing conflicts that blatantly disregard the fundamental rule of war: the protection of children. These protracted conflicts are damaging entire generations' futures, depriving children of the education they need to be valuable contributors to their societies and economies in the future. The safeguarding of a child's right to education in conflict zones necessitates the protection of education itself. Education can be life-saving, providing a safe haven for children from abuse, exploitation, and recruitment by armed forces. It is a critical factor in breaking the cycle of crisis and reducing the chances of future conflicts. The United Nations General Assembly unanimously agreed to establish a day to raise awareness of the millions of children living in conflict-ridden countries. The State of Qatar presented the resolution that proclaimed the day, with 62 countries co-sponsoring it. The resolution asserts that governments have the primary responsibility to provide protection and ensure all learners, particularly those in vulnerable situations, have access to inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels. It also underscores the need for increased efforts and funding to establish safe and protective school environments during humanitarian crises. UNESCO and UNICEF, in collaboration with partners within and outside the UN system, will facilitate the annual observance of the day. These UN entities have long been helping Member States strengthen their capacity to provide access to quality educational opportunities for all in times of crisis.
