Walk Your Dog Week, Ntl.: October 1-7

06:20 AM | -
Anyone with a dog knows the importance of getting out and walking your dog a couple of times a day (at least). National Walk Your Dog Week was created for Paws and Paper by the holiday creation company The Holiday Guild. The objective is to remind pet owners to get out there with their canine friends and take in some air for their health and that of their pets!

Wear Something Gaudy Day: October 17

06:20 AM | -
Like Festivus from "Seinfeld," Wear Something Gaudy Day originated with a comment by a character on a popular television show, in this case, the affable Larry Dallas on the sitcom "Three's Company." The wildly popular show followed three twenty-something roommates, two women, and a man, living in Santa Monica, California. At the time, it was considered scandalous for a heterosexual male to be roommates with two women. Today cohabitation is pretty standard, especially in high-rent areas like Los Angeles suburb Santa Monica and New York City, where rents run in the several thousands of dollars per month, even for a low-end apartment.

White Cane Safety Day: October 15

06:20 AM | -
White Cane Safety Day, also known as Blind Americans Equality Day, was created by a joint resolution in Congress, approved on October 6, 1964 (Public Law 88-628, as amended). In this resolution, Congress designated October 15 of each year as "White Cane Safety Day" to recognize the contributions of Americans who are blind or have low vision.

White Sunday (WS): October 13

06:20 AM | -
White Sunday, Lotu Tamaiti in Polynesian, translates to "Children's Sunday" remains one of the most critical days for religious Polynesians. It is the day children become the parents, and parents the children. Families spend the day going from church to church, where the children, all dressed in white, lead the church services. Feasts, gifts, and family gatherings highlight the day in Samoa, Tonga, Niue, and with Polynesian families in New Zealand, Australia, and other islands. The Monday following is a national holiday in Samoa, Tonga and Niue.

Wife Carrying Championships, Ntl. (US-ME): October 5

06:20 AM | -
Founded in 1999, the North American Wife Carrying Championships originate from the Finnish games, which began in 1991. For spectators, this 278-yard race of men carrying their wives through various obstacles is quite a spectacle and a good time for all. This race determines the winner for the US and Canada. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are unknown until a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Window Covering Safety Month, Ntl.: October

06:20 AM | -
October is National Window Covering Safety Month, a time of heightened public awareness focusing on a hidden danger many parents may overlook: the potential strangulation hazards to young children from window covering cords. The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urges consumers to check their window coverings for exposed or dangling cords, which can pose a strangulation hazard to infants and young children. WCSC, CPSC, and safety experts strongly recommend that consumers use only cordless window coverings or inaccessible cords in homes with young children.

Witch Hazel Day, Ntl: October 21

06:20 AM | -
National Witch Hazel Day originated with Dickenson Brands, Inc. in 2021. Witch hazel, a plant with a rich history and versatile uses, has long fascinated people with its unique properties. Indigenous peoples used witch hazel, native to North America, for its medicinal qualities long before European settlers arrived. They recognized its value in treating skin ailments and swelling, using the bark and leaves to create poultices and teas. The European settlers quickly adopted witch hazel for their medicinal uses, intrigued by its astringent properties. By the 19th century, it became a household remedy in the United States. Distilled witch hazel extract, often combined with alcohol, gained popularity for its soothing effect on skin irritations, minor cuts, and bruises. Today, witch hazel remains a staple in natural medicine and skincare. Its extract, rich in tannins, is renowned for reducing inflammation and tightening skin. It's a common ingredient in toners, aftershaves, and hemorrhoid treatments, prized for its ability to soothe and heal. Moreover, witch hazel's role extends beyond medicine. In the realm of spirituality and folklore, it is often associated with protection and healing. Some cultures use the branches of the witch hazel plant for dowsing, a practice to locate water or minerals underground. In the skincare industry, witch hazel's natural astringent qualities make it a preferred choice for managing acne and oily skin. Its gentle, natural properties appeal to those seeking eco-friendly and sensitive skin-friendly alternatives to harsh chemicals. As research continues, the potential of witch hazel expands. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties can be used in broader medicinal applications, underlining the plant's enduring appeal and versatility. From its indigenous roots to modern-day uses, witch hazel remains a testament to the enduring wisdom of natural remedies and the ongoing quest for holistic health solutions.
