Women's Eye Health and Safety Month: April

06:20 AM | -
Women's Eye Health and Safety Month occurs each April. Two-thirds of blindness and visual impairment occurs in women, which means women are 50 percent more likely than men to become victims of blindness and image problems. Women's Eye Health and Safety Month seeks to bring attention to this issue which in many cases can be mitigated or avoided through living a healthful lifestyle, protecting eyes from injury, and getting regular dilated-eye exams. The month also focuses on healthy eating. Several studies have suggested that specific vitamins and other nutrients may reduce vision loss. Carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin provide some eye protection and are found in dark, leafy greens, egg yolks, broccoli, and several yellow/orange vegetables. Omega-3 fats also may be essential for eye health and can be found in walnuts, certain fish, and flax. Staying active also can improve your eye and overall health. Regular, moderate physical activity can reduce your risk of developing problems that can lead to eye disease. The CDC recommends the following nine actions to protect your eyes: 1) Know your family's eye health history. It's important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease or condition since many are hereditary. 2) Eat right to protect your sight—in particular, eat plenty of dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens, and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, albacore tuna, trout, and halibut. 3) Maintain a healthy weight. 4) Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home, such as painting, yard work, and home repairs. 5) Quit smoking or never start. 6) Wear sunglasses that block 99 percent-100 percent of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. 7) Clean your hands before taking out your contacts, and cleanse your contact lenses properly to avoid infection. 8) Practice workplace eye safety. 9) Get regular comprehensive dilated eye exams.

Youth Sports Safety Month: April

06:20 AM | -
Rita Glassman of the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation and MomsTeam.com® created National Youth Sports Safety Month after her daughter Michelle suffered a severe back injury that ended her tennis career. The purpose of the month is to raise awareness with parents of child athletes on the tools and present options toward reducing the number and severity of injuries youth sustain in sports and fitness activities through the education of health professionals, program administrators, coaches, parents, and athletes. The National Youth Sports Safety Foundation website no longer exists. MomsTeam.com, which is affiliated, is now the official site for everything related to this month.

Autism Day, World: April 2

06:20 AM | -
Autism and other forms of disability are part of the human experience that contributes to human diversity. As such, the United Nations has emphasized the need to mainstream disability in the Organization’s development agenda. Mainstreaming disability requires an integrated approach to designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating policies and programs in all political, economic, and societal spheres so that inequality is not perpetuated. In September 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted the ambitious new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets that promise to leave no one behind. While all SDGs are universally applicable, disability and persons with disabilities are explicitly referenced in the following goals: a) Quality Education; b) Decent Work and Economic Growth; c) Reduced Inequalities; d) Sustainable Cities and Communities; e) Partnerships for the Goals.

Children's Book Day, Intl. (1805): April 2

06:20 AM | -
Since 1967, on or around the April 2 birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to inspire a love of reading and call attention to children's books. Each year a different National Section of IBBY has the opportunity to be the international sponsor of ICBD. It decides upon a theme and invites a prominent author from the host country to write a message to the children of the world and a well-known illustrator to design a poster. These materials are used in different ways to promote books and reading. Many IBBY Sections promote ICBD through the media and organize activities in schools and public libraries. Often ICBD is linked to celebrations around children's books and other special events that may include encounters with authors and illustrators, writing competitions, or announcements of book awards. Current and past posters are available from the IBBY Secretariat. A catalog of posters and messages that appeared between 1967 and 2002, created on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of IBBY, is also available.

Malvinas Day (AR)(1982): April 2

06:20 AM | -
On April 2, 1982, Argentina decided to reclaim its territory, the islands England held as its own. Argentinian forces invaded, and England responded. The battle for the islands would last two months, with Argentina surrendering on June 14, 1982. Malvinas Day is a public holiday in Argentina that honors the Argentine men and women who were wounded or lost their lives during this combat. I was in Brazil when this happened, so I knew them as the Malvinas Islands and the Malvinas Islands rather than the Falkland Islands conflict. That was how it was reported in the Brazilian media because that is the name Argentina uses to refer to them.
