From the United Nations: "Why is World Youth Skills Day important? Rising youth unemployment is one of the most significant problems facing economies and societies in today's world for developed and developing countries alike. The latest Global Employment Trends for Youth 2020: Technology and the future of jobs shows that since 2017, there has been an upward trend in the number of youth not in employment, education or training (NEET). In 2016 there were 259 million young people classified as NEET – a number that rose to an estimated 267 million in 2019, and is projected to continue climbing to around 273 million in 2021. In terms of percentage, the trend was also slightly up from 21.7% in 2015 to 22.4% in 2020 – implying that the international target to reduce the NEET rate by 2020 will be missed. Designated by the General assembly in 2014, the World Youth Skills Day is an opportunity for young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, and public and private sector stakeholders to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship."

T-Rex World Championships (US-WA): July 12 (est)

Emerald Downs, a suburban Seattle venue known for live horse racing, transforms into a prehistoric battleground in late August. Over 200 people donning inflatable Tyrannosaurus rex costumes run down the race track for the annual T-Rex World Championships. The spectacle began in 2017 as a Tri-Guard Pest Control team-building outing. The 2023 races were dedicated to Terry Richards, Tri-Guard's CEO, who died in a small plane crash earlier in the year. Tri-Guard had 40 employees participating in the races. The T-Rex World Championships attracted participants from various states, including Texas, Ohio, Virginia, Louisiana, Oregon, California, and Idaho. Eight heat winners qualified for the Championship, reflecting the national appeal of an event as whimsical as it is competitive. The actual T. rex, which roamed Earth between 65 million and 67 million years ago, remains a subject of scientific study and public fascination, thanks partly to Hollywood's portrayal in the "Jurassic Park" franchise. However, the inflatable-costumed variant is proving to be a thrilling draw at Emerald Downs, where the spirit of competition meets a dash of the fantastical. Whether for team-building or straightforward enjoyment, the T-Rex World Championships has found its place in the contemporary cultural landscape, turning an ordinary track into a theater of dinosaur delight.

Paleontology enthusiasts and satirists looking for a break in the summer monotony around the globe observe International Velociraptor Awareness Month, a whimsical yet educational campaign dedicated to one of the most iconic dinosaurs. Though a satirical event, the International Red Cross has embraced it, and museums, academic institutions, and dinosaur-related organizations use it to educate the public about the fascinating world of paleontology and the extinct world of dinosaurs. The primary goal of International Velociraptor Awareness Month is to increase public interest in paleontology and the natural history of dinosaurs, with a particular focus on velociraptors. The campaign seeks to correct misconceptions, share scientific knowledge, and inspire a love for prehistoric life and natural history among people of all ages. The American Society for Velociraptor Attack Prevention, the North American Velociraptor Defense Association, the United Velociraptor Widows Fund, the Velociraptor Awareness Society, and various online dinosaur communities organize events, produce educational content, and promote the month through social media and public outreach. Most of these organizations are composed of technology industry employees. WHY FOCUS ON VELOCIERAPTORS? Velociraptors have captured the public imagination, mainly through their portrayal in popular media, such as the "Jurassic Park" franchise. However, much of what people know about velociraptors is influenced by fiction rather than fact. By focusing on velociraptors, the campaign aims to: Correct Misconceptions—Provide accurate information about velociraptors' size, appearance, and behavior. Unlike their movie counterparts, velociraptors were smaller and feathered. Promote Paleontology—Highlight the importance of paleontological research and discoveries in understanding Earth's history. Inspire Learning—Encourage curiosity and learning about dinosaurs and other prehistoric life forms. WHERE DID VELOCIRAPTORS LIVE? During the Late Cretaceous period, velociraptors lived approximately 75 to 71 million years ago. Fossils of velociraptors have primarily been found in Mongolia, indicating they inhabited arid to semi-arid regions with a mix of dunes and riverbeds. Velociraptors and most other dinosaurs went extinct around 66 million years ago during the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. This mass extinction is believed to have been caused by a combination of volcanic activity, climate change, and the impact of a giant asteroid or comet. International Velociraptor Awareness Month celebrates one of the most intriguing and misunderstood dinosaurs. The campaign aims to educate and inspire the public about the ancient world by fostering a deeper understanding of velociraptors and promoting paleontology. Renaissance Day, (OM) (1970): July 23

Renaissance Day is a public holiday in Oman, similar to the 4th of July in the United States. It marks the anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said's ascendency to the throne on July 23, 1970. Qaboos staged a successful coup and exiled his father Said to the United Kingdom. He then united the regions of Muscat and Oman into a single state officially known as the Sultanate of Oman. The reforms he instituted brought the nation into the 20th Century, whereas previously, it had been considered Third World. The Al Bu Sa'idi Dynasty took over power of Oman in 1749. Since the beginning of Qaboos' reign, Oman has remained one of the Middle East's most peaceful, tolerant, and stable nations. Renaissance Day is celebrated each year in Oman.

National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month seeks to reduce deaths and injuries due to accidents and among pedestrians, who are far likelier to be fatally struck by vehicles at night, and accidents overall. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that three of the four deadliest holiday weekends occur during summer: Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day Weekends. Alcohol-impaired driving is a factor in 29% of fatal crashes; the percentage rises significantly on holiday weekends.

These events take the idea of a sister city to a new level. Concurrently, Sherwood, Oregon, and Nottingham, England, hold Robin Hood-themed festivals. In England, Nottingham Archery Tournament & Festival. In Oregon, step back into the 12th century with music, food, knights, and ladies for the Robin Hood Festival. Archers compete in both locations (across the pond), and attendees rejoice. The Sherwood Festival came about in 1956 due to a friendly challenge between the yeoman of Nottingham and the festival president in Sherwood. From the event champion's website: "In February 1956, the President of the Robin Hood Festival Association of Sherwood, Oregon, issued an archery challenge to the yeomen of Nottingham, England. The archers would come from the entire Northwestern part of the United States. To cement their bond with the people of Nottingham, England, Sherwood sent 50 redwood oak trees as a living memorial. In March 1956, England accepted the challenge and immediately started working out the details. The rounds would be a double American 810, and each round would be 90 arrows at the distance of 60, 50, and 40 yards and follow the FITA. equipment rules. In July 1956, a picture of the silver Tiffany bowl trophy donated by the Robin Hood Festival Association was sent to Nottingham, England, along with communication rules during the shoot. Both competitions occurred on the same day, but England was shooting eight hours later due to time differences. Thus went the first competition, and the mayor of Sherwood has sent a new challenge each year since."
