Whistleblower Appreciation Day, Ntl. (1778): July 30

On July 30, 1778, despite being in the height of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress unanimously voted to side with ten whistleblowers who had reported misconduct committed by the Continental Navy's Commander in Chief. Congress sanctioned the Commander and paid for the whistleblowers' defense against him, declaring: "That it is the duty of all persons in the service of the United States, as well as all other inhabitants thereof, to give the earliest information to Congress or any other proper authority of any misconduct, fraud, or misdemeanors." National Whistleblower Day recognizes the sacrifices and courage of whistleblowers and their enduring importance to the health and safety of our nation. It also marks the anniversary of adopting the National Whistleblower Law of 1778.

Wife Carrying Championships, Intl. (FI): July 3-4

The Wife Carrying World Championship in Finland has been held each year since 1991. The event is organized through volunteers from nearby village associations, entrepreneurs and seniors and youth living in Sonkajärvi. It is as the name describes: men carrying women on their backs compete in a series of relay endurance tests to determine the World Champion. It is as difficult to do as it is fun to watch. The event has been picked up in other countries as well including the United States and United Kingdom, each which hold their own competitions. The Wife Carrying World Championship is the brainchild of Mr. Eero Pitkänen, of the Sonkajärvi municipality. Decisions on the event are made via the Sonkajärven Eukonkanto corporation committee consisting of public servants within the Sonkajärvi municipality, deputies from nearby companies & associations, and private persons living in Sonkajärvi. PLEASE NOTE: All televised and venue specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) should be treated as estimated, even if the dates are set. Wrong Way Corrigan Day (1938): July 17

Wrong-Way Corrigan Day celebrates the anniversary of the New York to Dublin flight by Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan. On July 17, 1938, Corrigan tricked the US Government authorities. They insisted he could not fly to Dublin in his nine-year-old plane because it was too old. Not to be deterred, Corrigan filed an alternate flight plan to fly west across the US to Long Beach, California. The government was quite surprised when he landed in Dublin 28 hours and 13 minutes after takeoff. Corrigan became an instant American and Irish folk hero by successfully hoodwinking the US government. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) did not exist in 1938. It was created on August 23, 1958.

Yellow Pigs Day: July 17

Rest easy. This event has nothing to do with food and is kosher, halal, vegetarian, and vegan friendly. This little piggy does mathematics. Yellow Pigs Day is an annual celebration associated primarily with the Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics. The program is a summer math camp for high school students from all over the world who love math and want to learn more in a less austere and calculated manner. Their "secret symbol" the yellow pig with the number 17 printed on it, goes back to the 1970s. Not only is Yellow Pigs Day an excuse to bring together alumni, but it is also a celebration of the number 17. Why yellow pigs? That isn't explained. However, everything on campus and in the classroom has to do with the prime number 17, and yellow pigs are everywhere. Yellow Pigs Day is celebrated worldwide and now includes its own songs, traditions and general clowning around that has been adopted by programs including Mathcamp, PROMYS, MIT, the University of Chicago, and even Stanford. Yogini Ekadashi (H): July 10-11

Yogini Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of the waning fortnight of the Hindu month of Ashadha. Fasting on this day is done to rid oneself of various ailments and diseases. Hindus believe that blessings of good health are received in observing this fast, and all sins and ill deeds are redeemed.
