Frozen Yogurt Day, Ntl: February 6

Originally called Frogurt, HP Hood invented frozen yogurt in 1970. With the health food craze of the 1970s, it quickly gained popularity as an alternative to ice cream. In the 1980s, seizing upon the demand and opportunity, the TCBY chain of frozen yogurt stores opened. By 1986, frozen yogurt had become a 25 million-dollar-a-year industry, and in 2019 it became a 2.1 billion-dollar industry. Frozen Yogurt Day celebrates this dessert treat. Many retailers and restaurants will offer free samples on this day.

Future Farmers of America (FFA) Week, Ntl.: February 15-22

Future Farmers of America Week is an opportunity for FFA members, alumni, and sponsors to advocate for agricultural education and careers in Agriculture. Over 600,000 Junior High and High School children are involved through over 7,500 chapters. Activities include hosted teacher appreciation breakfasts and “Ag Olympics” competitions. The week seeks to ignite a passion for agriculture with the next generation of farmers and ranchers.

Galentine's Day (Gals Valentine's) is at least one of two known events that originated from television shows. In this instance, it was suggested in a 2010 episode of the scripted comedy series, "Parks and Recreation." Lacking a significant other, a character created Galentine's Day as a day for friends that are girls to celebrate together. The other event in the calendar from a television show is Festivus, from Seinfeld, which occurs on December 23.

Global Backyard Bird Count, The Great: February 14-17

The Audubon Society and Cornell University Lab of Ornithology created the Great Backyard Bird Count in 1998, with Bird Studies Canada joining in 2009. In 2013 it became a global event, with people in all 220 nations and territories taking part and sending images (and counts) from their backyards. In 2022, Spain, India, the United States, and Canada have the most active participation. That's a direct challenge to the rest of you to make your country proud! The heatmap of locations is updated throughout the event. TEACHERS & PARENTS The Great Global Backyard Bird Count is an excellent activity for kids and teens. Think of it as a bird census and an opportunity to learn about local wildlife. By participating, you are helping identify species in danger by contributing count observations from your backyard.
