Arts Month, Ntl. (PH): February 1-15

06:20 AM | -
Arts Month supports the Philippines' effort to nurture and promote its diverse artistic expressions. It reflects the country's commitment to honoring and preserving its cultural legacy while encouraging contemporary artistic innovation. Throughout February, various regions across the archipelago come alive with art exhibits, workshops, performances, and festivals. These events not only display the artistic prowess of Filipinos but also serve as an educational experience, enlightening locals and visitors about the country's artistic traditions and contemporary trends. The Philippines has produced several famous artists who have significantly contributed to the global art scene. Among them is Juan Luna, renowned for his masterpiece "Spoliarium," which won a gold medal in the 1884 Madrid Exposition of Fine Arts. Another notable figure is Fernando Amorsolo, celebrated for his sun-kissed rural landscapes and the distinct use of light in his paintings, earning him the title of the country's first National Artist in Painting. Benedicto Cabrera, better known as BenCab, is a contemporary Filipino artist whose works have influenced modern Philippine art. His paintings and sculptures reflect social and political commentary, often centered on the Filipino experience. Another luminary is Guillermo Tolentino, a sculptor known for his classical approach and works, including the iconic Bonifacio Monument in Caloocan City. Meanwhile, in literature, Nick Joaquin, a National Artist for Literature, has left an indelible mark with his works that explore Filipino identity and history. Arts Month in the Philippines is more than just a celebration; it is a testament to the nation's artistic journey, echoing the voices of past and present artists who have shaped the Filipino identity.

Avocado and Banana Month, Ntl.: February

06:20 AM | -
Avocado and Banana Month in February offers a unique opportunity to spotlight two of the world's most beloved and nutritious fruits: avocados and bananas. With its creamy texture and rich, nutty flavor, avocado is a staple in many diets. Native to south-central Mexico, it has become a global phenomenon, prized for its high content of healthy fats, mainly monounsaturated fat, and nutrients like potassium and vitamin E. Bananas, conversely, are known for their convenience, sweet taste, and impressive nutritional profile, including high levels of potassium, vitamin C, and dietary fiber. Though avocados and bananas are typically enjoyed in different culinary contexts—avocados often in savory dishes and bananas in sweet ones—there are innovative recipes that combine both. A popular example is a smoothie where the creaminess of avocado complements the sweetness of banana, creating a nutritious and energy-boosting beverage. Another example is avocado-banana bread, which offers a moist, dense texture and unique flavors. Avocados and bananas share a tropical origin. Both fruits are grown in tropical and subtropical climates and have become vital crops in many countries. Their popularity has spurred extensive cultivation, making them widely available in markets worldwide. Avocado and Banana Month underscores the importance of these fruits in our diet and the health benefits they offer. It serves as a reminder of the agricultural practices and economic factors that bring these fruits from farms to tables worldwide.

Baked Alaska Day, Ntl.: February 1

06:20 AM | -
Baked Alaska Day celebrates a dessert made of cake, ice cream, and baked meringue. Its origin is disputed as either France, the United States, or China. What is known is that the name was coined in 1876 by Chef Charles Ranhofer of Delmonico's restaurant in New York City to honor the acquisition of the Alaska Territory from Russia by the United States on October 18, 1867, and its official designation as a US District on May 17, 1884. Baked Alaska is simple to make. A cake is topped with ice cream and enshrouded with a meringue cap which is baked for a minute or so to brown and harden the meringue. The ice cream, insulated by the meringue, doesn't melt. Often fruits, honey, liquor, or nuts are added. Deliciously rich, Baked Alaska Day celebrates the dessert and the state.

Ballet Day, Ntl.:  February 7

06:20 AM | -
National Ballet Day is an unofficial event dedicated to the art of ballet, a form of artistic dance known for its grace, precision, and fluidity of movement. This day is an opportunity for ballet enthusiasts, dancers, choreographers, and audiences to honor the rich history of ballet and its enduring impact on the world of dance and beyond. Ballet originated during the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century and was developed further in France and Russia as a concert dance form. It began as a courtly dance among the aristocracy, a spectacle of elegance and refinement. "ballet" comes from the Italian word "ballo," which means to dance. In the 16th century, Catherine de Medici, an Italian noblewoman who became the queen of France, was instrumental in promoting and financing ballet in the French court. Ballets at this time were lavish events intertwined with vocal and orchestral music, drama, and elaborate costumes and scenery. During the reign of Louis XIV in the 17th century, ballet began to take the form we recognize today. Louis XIV, an accomplished dancer, established the first ballet academy in 1661, the Académie Royale de Danse. The 18th and 19th centuries saw ballet evolve significantly, with the introduction of new techniques and the emergence of the ballerina as the central figure in performances. This era marked the shift from courtly performances to public theater. Ballet gained prominence as an art form in its own right during this period, with the development of pointe work (dancing on toes), a more codified technique, and the emergence of narrative-driven ballets. Ballet reached new heights of popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly with the influence of the Russian Imperial Ballet and choreographers like Marius Petipa, who created classics such as "The Nutcracker," "Swan Lake," and "The Sleeping Beauty." The 20th century saw further evolution with the introduction of modern and contemporary styles, challenging traditional norms and expanding the expressive range of the art form. National Ballet Day acknowledges this rich history and the artistry, discipline, and athleticism required in ballet. Celebrations include performances, workshops, educational outreach, and sharing the joy of ballet with a broader audience through various media platforms. This day underscores ballet's role in cultural history and its relevance and beauty as artistic expression.

Barley Month: February

06:20 AM | -
February is National Barley Month. Barley is one of the world's oldest and most versatile grains, with a history spanning thousands of years and continents. Originating in West Asia's Fertile Crescent and the cradle of early civilizations, barley was one of the first domesticated grains, pivotal to the agricultural revolution. Barley's journey began around 10,000 years ago. Its cultivation was integral to the diet and economies of ancient civilizations, including the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. For the Egyptians, barley was a staple food and a primary ingredient in beverage production. The Greeks and Romans also valued barley's nutritional benefits and used it as a common food source for their athletes and gladiators. The grain's resilience made it easily transported to different climates and soil types, facilitating its spread across Europe and Asia. Its ability to thrive in harsh conditions made it especially important in regions where other crops failed. Today, barley is celebrated for its health benefits and culinary versatility. It's a rich source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals like selenium and magnesium. Barley's unique chewy texture and nutty flavor make it a popular ingredient in various dishes, including soups, stews, and salads; it often substitutes for rice in risottos and pilafs. One of barley's most notable uses is in the brewing industry. Malted barley is a critical ingredient in beer and whiskey production. Its enzymes aid in fermentation and contribute to the beverages' flavor profiles. Hulled or whole grain barley retains more nutritional value than pearled barley, making it a preferred choice for health-conscious consumers. The grain is used to make barley water, a traditional drink believed to have various health benefits. Barley is a narrative of human civilization. From being a cornerstone of ancient diets to its modern-day culinary and industrial applications, barley's journey mirrors human innovation and adaptability. Its cultivation and consumption connect us with our past and continue to play a significant role in dietary habits around the world.

Bartender Day, World: February 24

06:20 AM | -
Bartending originated in Rome, Greece, and Asia. It is a profession that, in its infancy, required the barkeeper to be skilled at brewing spirits, ales, and wines. Beginning in the 20th century, cocktails became popular, and the bartender, rather than a keeper, was born. Prohibition increased the popularity of these mixed drinks. By the time the United States emerged from the stranglehold of the Volstead Act, bartending had been elevated to a highly skilled service profession. World Bartender Day recognizes the achievements and craft of bartenders worldwide. This event first ran in 2018.

Batepá Massacre (ST)(1953): February 3

06:20 AM | -
The Batepá Massacre, a somber and significant event in the history of São Tomé and Príncipe, unfolded on February 3, 1953. This tragic incident is remembered for its brutal repression by the colonial Portuguese authorities against native Creoles, known as "Forros." Tension had been escalating in the archipelago, primarily due to the oppressive labor practices enforced by the Portuguese. São Tomé and Príncipe, a Portuguese colony since the late 15th century, had become a significant cocoa producer by the early 20th century, relying heavily on forced labor. The Forros, descendants of freed slaves and the native population, vehemently resisted these exploitative practices. In the early 1950s, under António de Oliveira Salazar, the Portuguese regime sought to intensify labor exploitation to boost cocoa production. They implemented labor reforms that further eroded the rights of the native workers. The Forros perceived these reforms as a direct threat to their freedom and livelihoods, which heightened tensions between the colonists and the natives. On February 3, 1953, these tensions reached a boiling point. The Portuguese authorities, citing a planned uprising by the Forros, carried out a violent crackdown. Official accounts of the death toll vary. The number most commonly quoted is that hundreds of natives were killed, with some estimates suggesting that up to 1,000 Forros lost their lives. The massacre was followed by a period of intense repression, with many Forros fleeing to the jungle to escape further violence. The Batepá Massacre remains a pivotal moment in the history of São Tomé and Príncipe. It symbolizes the brutal legacy of colonialism and the extreme measures colonial powers employed to suppress resistance. The massacre played a significant role in galvanizing anti-colonial sentiment, contributing to the eventual independence movement in São Tomé and Príncipe, culminating in independence from Portugal in 1975. Remembering the Batepá Massacre is crucial for acknowledging and understanding the impacts of colonial rule in São Tomé and Príncipe. It serves as a reminder of the atrocities committed under colonialism and the enduring struggle for freedom and human rights in post-colonial states. The memory of the massacre continues to influence the nation's cultural and political landscape, underscoring the importance of historical reflection and the pursuit of justice and reconciliation.
