Setsubun (JP): February 2

06:20 AM | -
Setsubun (Bean-Throwing Festival or Bean-Throwing Ceremony) is a traditional Japanese festival celebrating the arrival of spring according to the lunar calendar. Setsubun translates to "seasonal division." This tradition began sometime between 1337 & 1573 AD. Soybeans are a symbol of vitality in Japanese culture. One of the most well-known customs during Setsubun is the "mamemaki" ritual. People scatter roasted soybeans (called "fukumame") both inside and outside their homes while chanting, "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" which means "Out with the demons! In with fortune!" The purpose of this ritual is to drive away evil spirits and invite good luck into the household. Japanese legend says that by scattering beans on this day, bad luck and misfortune shall be banished. Anyone can throw soybeans, but sometimes it is done by a family member who is considered the head of the household or by a designated person representing the demon (oni). In some communities, celebrities or local personalities participate in mamemaki events, adding a festive touch to the celebrations. Another popular aspect of Setsubun is eating "ehōmaki," which are sushi rolls filled with various ingredients. The unique feature of ehōmaki is that it must be consumed in complete silence while facing the year's lucky compass coordinates. The coordinates change annually and are based on the Chinese zodiac sign for the year (in 2024, it will be the Dragon). Legend states that by eating the entire roll without speaking, each person will gain good luck and blessings for the year ahead. Setsubun is not only celebrated in homes but also in temples and shrines throughout Japan. Temples hold large-scale events, attracting crowds who participate in the festive rituals, with celebrities and sumo wrestlers often throwing beans to the assembled crowd, making the event even livelier. While Setsubun is most commonly associated with the bean-throwing ritual, it is also an occasion for reflection and preparation for the coming season, when people clean their homes and make resolutions for the year ahead, setting the stage for a fresh start as spring approaches. Setsubun has been a cherished tradition in Japan for centuries, combining elements of folklore, superstition, and family togetherness. It is a time of joyous celebration and a symbolic way to welcome the arrival of spring while warding off any lingering winter negativity.

Shower with a Friend Day, Ntl.: February 5

06:20 AM | -
Winter is the coldest and loneliest season of the year. With dwindling daylight and Valentine's Day at its heart, February can often leave people feeling somber. National Shower with a Friend Day injects humor into the season while educating people on the benefits of showering in fresh, filtered water. Your body absorbs more chlorine through the skin and lungs while showering than while drinking tap water. It can irritate your lungs and have seriously unpleasant side effects over time. Chlorine strips protein from your skin and hair, leaving it dry and itchy. Adding a filter to your shower can significantly reduce the presence of chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, and heavy metals in your water. Your skin will thank you. Your lungs will thank you, and your hair will thank you!

Shut-in Visitation Day, Ntl.: February 11

06:20 AM | -
National Shut-in Visitation Day is held on February 11 each year. National Shut-in Visitation Day shares hope and friendship with the millions of men, women, and children who, due to physical, mental, or emotional reasons, are incapable of leaving their homes and living out their existence cut off from the outside world. These situations leave people feeling alone, isolated, and dispirited. Think about your neighborhood. Is there someone you rarely see? Would it make their day if you brought them flowers, cookies, or a plant and shared a cup of tea? What about your local nursing home or hospice? So many people end up in such places, alone and far from their families. Try spending the day talking, listening, and engaging people who don’t have the opportunity to leave. Gift them an afternoon of normalcy. Today is about kindness and caring, helping your fellow man, and giving the most valuable gift you have—your time and yourself. This event began with Monsignor Losito (May 7, 1931 - November 3, 2011) of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Reading, Pennsylvania. It continues as part of his legacy but is not officially sponsored.

Sick, World Day of (C)(1858): February 11

06:20 AM | -
World Day of the Sick is a feast day of the Roman Catholic Church instituted on May 13, 1992, by Pope John Paul II. Beginning on February 11, 1993, World Day of the Sick is celebrated every year on the day of commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes. All Christians are urged to seek "a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one's suffering." Pope John Paul II was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease as early as 1991, an illness he disclosed later. Significantly, he created a World Day of the Sick one year after his diagnosis. The Pope had written much on suffering and believed in redemption and salvation through Christ. The feast of Lourdes is chosen as the day, given the Blessed Virgin (Our Lady of Lourdes) has been proven to generate a minimum of 70 miracles since 1858. This event falls on the anniversary of the first appearance of the Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette in Lourdes, France, in 1858.

Single-tasking Day: February 23

06:20 AM | -
Forget multitasking. Go for single-tasking. National Single-tasking Day will be much easier for right-handed men. Why? Women and left-handed men have larger corpus callosum than right-handed men. It means women and left-handed men can both think and feel simultaneously, something essential for multitasking and analyzing multiple sources of information, including emotional IQ. It's also evolutionary. Women multitask because if the children were to survive in caveman days up to the present, they needed to be able to watch them and do other things. Got a problem that needs someone to juggle a bunch of different things? Put a woman or a left-handed man on it. They can watch tv, read a book, watch the children, and cook simultaneously. However, a right-handed man is your best choice if you need absolute focus, no deviations, and no distractions. He is purpose-driven and will only stop once he completes his work. He is a single-tasker. It is why many men can't deal with someone talking over the game on TV. They'll talk or watch the game, but don't make them do both. You'll drive them crazy. Evolutionarily, this worked. He needed to protect and bring home food. It is also why men can go for 30-45 days after a break-up and not appear phased. They usually get thumped by emotions in weeks six and eight. Until then, they can think it away by focusing on something else. If you've broken up with a right-handed man, give him 60 days to reconnect. If he loves you, he will reconnect by then. If he doesn't, he'll move on to another task. If you'd like to learn more about this, read Dr. Pat Allen's book "Getting to I Do."
