Joseph Jenkins Roberts (March 15, 1809 – February 24, 1876) was born a free man in the United States and emigrated to Africa in 1829. He became the African nation’s first president, and its seventh president upon its independence. Liberia was created as a settlement of the American Colonization Society (ACS) to provide freedom and prosperity in Africa for persons of African descent.
