National Solidarity Day for Compassionate Patient Care promotes awareness of the importance of compassionate and respectful relationships between healthcare professionals and their patients. Respect and compassion reflect in attitude, sensitivity to the values, autonomy, and cultural and ethnic backgrounds of patients and their families.
Dr. Randall Friese, a triage physician at the University of Arizona Medical Center, sums it up. He told Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords after she was shot on January 8, 2011, that holding her hand and reassuring her that she was cared for was his most important job.
